Default Bolton Abbey.

Had a nice day on Monday, thanks to Phil, flyfishwithme, and Robert, bigbadtroutfisher, on the Wharfe.
After a delightful trip down with Robert, good dry day and no wind, we met up with Phil.
A nice walk down mowed paths to the river, to find it in excellent condition, a little peaty coloured, but just nice.
I soon got onto a trout of about a pound, as did Phil, then caught a super Grayling around the two pound mark.
Followed by a few more trout up to 1.5lbs.
I think between us we had the best part of twenty fish, all returned safely.
Robert apparently lost a good fish at the net, and Phil gave him some tuition in fishing spiders.
I met up with Phil, Spiderplus around 7pm, and had a good chat.
Apart from a heavy shower around 2pm the weather was kind.
Pretty stretch of water, and some lovely runs.

Question Policy question

Is Bolton Abbey catch & release? Do they stock it?

Yes they do stock it, but most if not all the fish we caught, looked like wildies to me. Popped them all back anyway.
You are allowed 4 fish each on a day ticket.

The river is lightly stocked. It doesn't really need it but under a lease agreement with a local trout farmer they are obliged to take about 500 brown rout each year. These are distributed along the five mile stretch with the majority of the fish released into the 'day ticket' stretches. They are normally catchable size with some larger fish early in the season.
The river doesn't need them though as there are plenty of fish n the river. On one short stretch that I introduced Steven and Robert to, there would have been 50 trout and graylng in the run.
Bolton Abbey is a fabulous fishery and some large numbers can be caught if you have good skill and a range of techniques at your disposal. But it can be very tough as the fish aren't free risers. However, they ca be fished up with spiders and the right dry fly. Smll parachute style flies work, as does the F-Fly.
A very good day and the total as just short of 30 fish.

Sorry for the delay with the photos, they were sent to me via an email.
Not being a technophobe, I have not been able to upload them, but the email has been forwarded to Buzz, who has the technology.
So watch this space.

If I can help, please email (waterlines@tiscali.co.uk) me the photos. I'm really interested in getting a look at some wild Wharfe trout. Thanks again.
