Default Broadlands

Hello all,

can anyone tell me what Broadlands on the Test is fishing like this year? I seem to remember someone talking about it before the season started but cannot find any info on here.

I have fished for many years at Nursling and Testwood which has now unfortunately become a shambles - almost unfishable - so I was wondering about venturing further upstream.

Any information would be very much appreciated.

Middle of the August weed cut Joyseeker! Very frustrating with a few hundred tons of weed coming down. The Test was almost unfishable yesterday. Take plenty of vino mate.

only time i've fished there is after a weed cut. not had a problem with floating weed but suspect so much food is in the water fishing is harder.

I've fished there a few times and usually done quite well.

There are a lot of stocked brownies and a few rainbows and they seem keen to take nymphs if there's no rise. There are also quite a few grayling over the gravelly stretches and some decent chub around, especially in the backwater.

Good luck.

I've had grayling on small (16) dark claret and black klinks and towards the evening the browns have taken parachute olives and sedges. I suspect black beetles would do well under the trees, but I'm on a bit of a roll with them at the moment.

I haven't fished there for a year or so but I ended up trying to target the grayling, which can run pretty large, rather than the stockies, although it seems rude not to if they're offering.

The last time I took a trout from there it was crammed so full of cased caddis that it crunched when I held it and it took a weighted GRHE nymph which, I guess, was a fairly close imitation.

Hope you have a good day.

you were right they were taking cased caddis but also that day (unusually) they were rising a plenty.

the shocker of the day was when i waded up and spooked a fish as long as my arm. i was so shocked i moved up stream before i realised i was the fisherman and start casting to where it had tucked under the weeds. i think it was a salmon from the silver belly but the more experienced tell me it was more likely a pike

Nice to see the record of the trip, Joyseeker. What (and when) did they rise to and did you meet any grayling?

There are a lot of pike there. My pal got spooked by one rising up through the water in front of him that he initially took for a salmon and later caught one of about 8lbs on a big furry fly.

Cheers,

Gudgeon

we had 2 ladies which never left the water..... they kept me playing for ages..... spitting the olives out before i could strike. my companion got them on nymph.

i'll be targeting the pike next year.
