Default River Smite - Nottinghamshire

Does anyone have any knowledge of trout in the River Smite which flows into the Devon in Nottinghamshire?
I have been reading an old report of trout being amongst the fish being killed in a pollution incident on the river. Any inmformation would be kept in the strictest confidence. I feel a trout tour coming on for the streams and brooks of Nottinghamshire.

Hi Nick, Smite flows through my village, no trout just chub, dace and the odd jack pike. Perch and rudd where it becomes the Devon and quickens up a little in flow. I live on its upper reaches and it is a slow flowing lowland river, unlikely to be able to sustain trout i would have thought. BUT i was in Bulwell the other weekend and there is definatly trout in the Leen, i saw a beautiful fish right in the town centre! Some massive Tench and chub too, lots of weed mind, yet to fish it but will do soon!

Had a fish out the Meden yet?

Hi Martyn,
Thanks for the info, I was just wondering after coming across some articles similiar to this one:

http://www.newarkadvertiser.co.uk/ne.../25/story3.htm

I'm targetting the Leen at the moment. I'm going to have a close look at the stretch that flows past the QMC this weekend, as well as some stretches that flow near to the tramline in Basford, and then up to Papplewick. I'll let you know how I get on.

I've had 5 trout so far out of the Meden at Church Warsop all on dry fly. I understand part of the Meden has a gamekeeper on it, and there are some large brownies there.

Also hope to get out onto the Erewash soon as well, it would be great to get the first documented fly caught brownie out of there.

Nick

Hello Nick,
I live in the Vale of B and have been surveying the Smite for signs of wild brown trout. So far no sucess but there are quite a few shoals (15-20 fish) of chub. At one point on the river there is one very large one maybe 2lbs or so which swims in shallow water. The banks of the river at this point are very steep which makes it extremeley difficult to cast. I have tried to tempt a chub with a dry fly but couldnt get anywhere near the fish. Got to get a smaller rod 10ft is much too big.
Cheers

Hi Ephemeridae
Good to hear you are out on the Smite, chub on the fly are fun! A nice big bushy dry will do the job, a soldier palmer is as good as any! I tend to get away with an 8 foot rod for 4 weight on the most rivers and streams. Believe you me there must be some wild brownies there, you'd be surprised where they are in Nottinghamshire. Have a look at a certain river near to the centre of Nottingham, trout are there and some good specimens too!

My cousins used to live near the Leen in Basford when we were kids. It looked like a horrible polluted open sewer in those days. It's nice to hear that it's in much better health now. I do wonder what might be lurking in it when I see it through the tram window on trips into the city.
