Default River/stream/brook near Ashbourne

Right then found a reasonable looking camp-site that should cater for all the families needs just north of Ashbourne near Dovedale. So the important things in life, once the kids are in bed my mate and I would like to escape for an hour or so to wet a line. Is there any reasonably priced fishing to be had? I guess the Dove itself is out of the question?? To be honest id be happy catching tiny brownies from a trickle. May even take the kids if there is a suitable spot.

Cheers in advance.

Sheepy.

Sheppy

You are going to struggle I'm afraid.

The three main rivers round that way are the Bentley Brook, The Henmore and the Dove.

If you are staying at Callow Top - they may have fishing on the Bentley Brook - but I am not sure.

The Henmore - through Ashbourne may also be free - but again I am not sure.

Default Bentley Brook - Callow Top

BB fishing rights owned North and South of Callow Top by Ashbourne Fly Fishing Club, no day tickets and our keeper has a Cloak of Invisibility

Your best best is either stillwater (Carsington is not far) or splash out (as it were) and have a day on the Wye at the Peacock.

You can get a day ticket on the Derwent at Darley Dale for a few quid, but I really don't think it is what you have in mind....

I also vaguely recall Peter Arfield (Bakewell FF Shop) telling me about a farmer with some fishing rights on the Dove who sold day tickets - but that was a few years ago. Does anyone know anything about that?

I still think best bet is as per Warren's answer to your previous post - the coarse fishing in Youlgreave.

I stayed in a self-catering place in Suffolk last year which had its own small lake stuffed full of little dace and roach. I had more fun fishing for them on the fly than on the "formal" fly-fishing day...

Default The Dove

You can get a day ticket on the Dove downstream of the road bridge near Hartington. Go from Hartington towards Hulme End, just after the road bridge over the Dove (with a house right next to it) you go round a sharp left hand bend, then just on your right is a B&B called the Rakes. You can get day tickets from the man there (who is also the bailiff). Its only a small stretch but OK for an evening's enjoyment.

This is what I was told by the farmer's wife (don't ask ) that own's the land there on the left hand bank.

Are you feeling a bit lazy tonight t/tigan too many chores perhaps wearing you out and forcing you into abbreviations

I haven't fished through that field but I have been either side of it, almost. There's fish lower down between this field and the DCAC stretch and up above it which is Sheffield Trout Anglers (I think??).

The Charles Cotton Hotel in Hartington has some water I believe also and I just found this:-

Banktop Farm, Hartington. Tel No 01298 84205
Pass the village pond on the left, through a couple of gates, and the farm is on the left. B&B, cream teas and tickets for small stream section of the Upper Dove. Not renowned for vast quantities of fish, but of high average size. Here be Grayling and Brown Trout.

The last sentence sounds likes Charles Cotton wrote it....so it be !

I think this has now been taken over by the Derbyshire county.

The fishing through Ashbourne is free. You can get in by the car park opposite Sainsburys and wade all the way up to the park. Its a bit 'urban' but there are a few nice spots and one to two fish.

If you call in to the shop in Ashbourne they will give you details.

er the old guy at rakes is the former bailiff on the Beresford dale beat, i wasnt aware of the fact there was any day ticket water on this stretch, certainly there was at the two other sites mentioned at the charles cotton (worth a call in to see if they still do day tickets) and Bank Top Farm still does day tickets i think

Concerned at possibly giving out duff information I have checked with Raikes Farm and charlie is correct in saying that they DO NOT sell day tickets for the stretch below the bridge. I did say that I was told by a farmers wife

So Charlie I bow down to your superior local knowledge...it must be because you're a cambridge lad that you have an underlying educational advantage on me
