Default Cumbrian Eden

Has anyone any information regarding how the Eden is fishing?

The Eden is high at the moment. That and a new baby boy have meant I haven't been out since the start of the month.

Things were just starting to hot up though and I'd imagine that when the water comes right, there will be the usual excellent - if challenging - sport to nymphs, dries and spiders.
I felt that spring hereabouts came very late this year and that sport thro March and April was on the slow side. When I get back to the river, I expect to see Olive Uprights, Yellow Mays and Gnats on the water and fish feeding on them confidently....

Tight lines,
Matt

Matt, so that's what you spent the money I gave you for your Sage SLT on...

Mesajoe

Ha ha ha!
No, I managed to get the 4# version very soon after - too quickly for the wife to notice what was going on! It has seriously curtailed my fishing though, although I do have a boat booked on Ullswater next Sunday which I'm very much looking forward to.

I wonder how old the little blighter will need to be before I can thrust a fly rod into his hands.......

Have you tried Rivercall? 09066197733 gives you twice daily river conditions at Kirkby Stephen, Appleby and Corby. It does cost you a few pence each time though!
Sorry I can't help today, I'm still confined within four walls. Oh, the agony!

Thanks for that phone number, Matt. I ought to have tried that before but better late than never. Please post a report here yourself when you have been on the river. I am a serious drive from Cumbria and need to be sure it will be worth it. Also, if you have a any knowledge of the salmon beats, I would love to hear about them.

Thanks.

Richard,

Can't tell you much about the salmon, I'm afraid, other than try the lower beats, below Penrith. Lazonby estates have two excellent beats available on pre-booked day tickets. I'll try and dig out the phone nr for you (also excellent trout and grayling water, incidentally).

Forecast hereabouts is for a dry week into next weekend. The river is currently at summer level and clear, but we are in the cream of the season at the moment. If you make the journey over the next week or so, I should think it won't be a wasted one.

I'll keep you informed - hopefully I'll be able to get out a bit more over the next few weeks.

Incidentally, you might try looking at the regular reports posted on KSAA's website:

http://www.blog.kirkbystephen.net/eden/

This is an excellent site run by a club on the upper reaches - available on a day ticket from the village general store and excellent fishing if there is a bit of fresh water coming through.

Tight lines,
Matt

Fished the Eden and Eamont this afternoon and evening:

Both rivers at NSL and clear. Hot sunshine and light SE breeze promised a tough time, but surprisingly I fared quite well. I had 5 fish in total - 2 at about 8oz, 2 between 12oz and the pound and one whopper at 2lb 4oz.
All fish came to standard upstream nymphing tactics; 3 of them took the baetis nymph and two - including the biggie - took the heptagenid nymph.

There was no co-ordinated hatch as such, but I saw at least one of each of the following at some point:
Gnats, Mayfly, olive upright, caenis, small stoneflies, sedges. Nothing really rising though.

Nice to be back on the river after more than a month away....
