Default The Ewenny

Spent a few hours yesterday on the Ewenny, which is half a mile from me.
Lovely to be out, knee deep in these riffles, trying to tempt the local wildies.
I think I must have been too preocupied with my surroundings,as I missed a few fish.
But who cares when your here!

Or here?

Lots of these about too.

Strangely enough though, not many being taken, the trout seemed preoccupied with very small black gnats.Probably my undoing as I persevered with a May,and the fish it rose were too small to take it properly.

Leave you with a few more.Methinks a return match is on tonight!

Lovely pics - looks like a bit of water is needed to!

Which stretch were you fishing? Above Waterton?

My lad is down there at the end of half term. He keeps a membership of Pencoed as it is great fishing.
Regards
Mark

Hi Ade,
You cannot beat being out on a small river, when Mother Nature is in full-swing; and the warmth of late Spring gives everything a bright glow, the green leaves on the the trees and bushes, the wild flowers in the hedgerows, the water shimmering in the sunlight, as it trickles over the rocks and stones. Everything looks so clean and fresh, makes you feel happy just being alive!

Really nice photos of the Ewenny, it is a truly beautiful little river!

Thanks for sharing it with us!

Regards Ade,

Mostyn

Thanks Mostyn,
Any time you fancy a try ,let me know, maybe an exchange trip to the Usk could be arranged?
The river is really beautiful at present, the whole of nature on show in her spring finery. You find yourself wading a stretch with the high banks either side drenched in Bluebells, the scent is quite intoxicating!
Give it another week (and a bit of rain)and she will on top form, when the Mays are a little less sporadic-makes you feel priviliged to be a river fisher

Regards

Ade

Back for another couple of hours tonight, totally different this time-no May's to be seen, loads of big Olives though.
Started at the bottom of the beat, which is a combination of slow glides and deep pools, well oxygenated and usually home to a few spotties.Missed a couple of lightening quick rises, and was considering going down a size in fly when this little fella obliged.

Through a couple of pools, put a few shy risers down with a couple of atrocious casts!, and then this little Lady took a liking to the detached body Mayfly.

The Ewenny is full of Grayling now, ranging from a few ounces to over 2lbs,providing all year round sport.

Moving on to a deep slow pool, which I usually bypass because it's soooo hard to land a fly correctly on the glassy surface,I stopped for a few minutes to check for rises.Sure enough there was a steady "sipper" at the confluence of a small stream entering the main flow.
Agreeing with myself that this would be the last cast tonight I popped the fly over him and in slow motion he sipped it in,again a lovely small WBT full of fight.

Really pleased I stopped at the pool now as it's now become not as impossible as I thought to extract on of it's occupants

Another great evening on the little river, and not another angler in sight!

Hi Ade,
Another cracking set of photos, that little river looks better every time you post new photos. That little fella must have been hungry, the fly it took is almost as big as it! Small fish in perfect condition equal lots of fun, add to this a perfect setting, what more could anyone ask for!!

Cheers Ade.

I was a member of the ewenny/pencoed anglers club for many a year. i always found the best grayling fishing to be by fords...im led to believe that as the club was split in two nobody has rights down by fords these days...is that correct ?

Hi Matt,
The club is still going strong, and the Ford's water is included in the membership. It's actually run by Ogmore Anglers but as a member of Pencoed we have permission to fish there.
