Default River Wear today

Hi all ,

had a few hours on the river this afternoon , upon arrival noticed the water was running high and tea stained and there was alsorts coming off as far as hatches were concerned .(i must learn to identify the insects).

i started off at the tudhoe stretch and fished klinks upstream alternating between olive, black and hares ear .

had the odd offer but nothing landed , moved further up and fished a part that i'd never fished before .i sat watching the river for 5 mins and noticed the trout were rising in 3 areas of a fast moving smooth glide just behind a rocky riffle that had a tree in the river giving the trout good cover .

i was getting an offer nearly every cast and landed a few trout in the 6-8" range , all slipped back to fight another day .

there was a trout rising freely right on the edge of the tree , didn't look a big one but thought i'd put my klink over it , 1st cast ....a huge spalsh but missed it , i realised this was a big fish .
i let it settle for a few more mins to see if it would start feeding again , oh yes without a care in the world it was off again . next cast right on the edge of the tree and bang it was on and off downstream , my rod had a good bend in it and the trout wasn't showing at all , after a minute or so it came into the side about 5 or 6 yards down from me and i got a good glimpse of it , it looked long but not fat , but a nice trout tho . a good tug on the line and it was off gutted .it would of been my biggest trout for years on the Wear .
nevermind you win some you lose some .
after a 5 min break sorting my leader out and ginking my klink up noticed a trout rising in exactly the same spot again , surely he wouldn't be back ???

a couple of casts covering it i connected with this , lovely little wildy , really fat and huge black spots , sorry about pics but it was on my phone as i'd forgotten my camera

slipped her back and decided to move on just around the corner where there was a lovely bit of river , perfect klink water .
noticed the fish were still rising freely and gorging on whatever came downstream , i was in my element . i was getting plenty of offers and landing the odd fish between misses .

then i connected with this in about a foot of fast riffled water , after a 5 minute fight where the line was getting stripped at a fast rate i finally landed it (can't remember the last time a trout on a river stripped my line).

the same fish , although it looks totally different (rubbish camera on phone )

after a quick picture and measure off she went back , measured 16" any idea what it would of weighed ?

definetly a wild fish although the 2nd pic doesn't do it justice .

i couldn't believe it , after posting a thread on the decline of the river yesterday , then having a day like this .

sorry, river Wear , i'll never talk you down again .

i fished on for another hour or so and landed and missed many more trout before deciding to call it a day and get my gear ready for a day on the eden with Mrtrout and Terry cousin tommorrow.

Nice report Sid, hope we can live up to that for you tomorrow.
I would guess about 1.5lb on that fish.

the wear fishes really well when its just thinning down from a flood ,it never really gets going till back end of april as the water is ice cold usually and very little comes off as far as insect life goes .

Nice report Sid,

When I fished the Wear regularly (a few years ago) thats exactly how I found it too. Patchy and very water-height dependant, but hit it right and you're away!
