Default Penpont beat on the Usk

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ive fished this a few times and always caught a couple of very nice fish , but ive had to work bloody hard for them. I know I know ! it shouldn't be easy but considering the length of the beat and the variety of the water , getting two fish for 10 hours effort is a bit much

I catch down by the campsite and in the fast water just below the bridge , but ****** all in between

Does anyone esle have any experience of this beat ?

Hi Tommythis,

Penpont has quality fish all the way through it but it has been 100% C&R for 4 years and the heavywieghts (a.k.a penpont porkers) are getting a bit testy.

People who do best, take their time and fish as long a leader as they can. It is not a beat that throws up double fish bags very often but does reguarly produce PB's. Once I waited for two cigarettes on he third pool below the bridge (fast narrow neck, into long shallow glide) and marked 2 quality fish rising by the alder roots tight to far bank, gently waded in.... and the big fish in the margin I had missed, bolted up putting the whole pool down! Waded out again!

I also hooked the fish of a lifetime at the neck of the pool above the bridge, 5,6,7....don't know but it looked huge as it leisurely cruised past

It is also a pretty special place to spend a day

Upper Usk has been tough this spring, but the next month should be the cream of the season.

As a final note Penpont seems to drop her guard and big catches are made as the colour drops out of a spate in the summer.
