Hello Simon,
Sorry for the delay in a report (just got home from another fishing trip into dusk tonight over the bridge in Wye & Usk country...glutton for punishment).
Got to the Muckleford Bridge & started fishing about 7.45am on Thursday. Fair to say from the off fly life was rife and fish were rising all over the place. Indeed caught two browns in two casts, starting with a size 16 Parachute Greenwells Glory. This seemed an acceptable offering for the next hour & a half, plenty of olives and midges on and above the water, so much so I inhaled some twice and couldnt stop coughing. By about 9.30am I noticed the first Mayfly Duns coming off & these continued through the middle part of the day in a steady trickle. The Greenalls & then Parachute Adams started failing me and were being ignored. However, I cottoned on the fish were selectively targeting the Mayfly Duns. So on with a Grey Wolff - immediate responses and the game was on again. I packed in fairly early having acheived my catch and release limit with ease. I spotted some spent Mayfly spinners before leaving mid - afternoon. Was impressed with the river, with plenty of wild browns up to a pound. Also caught a bigger stocked fish around 16 inches. The fish certainly seemed to have good appetites in spite of the abundance of natural food.
Was also amazed by a crow at the top of the beat that must have been nesting their. Kept hovering over me, swooping down & circling me whilst making heck of a racket. Quite a strange incident (couldnt help thinking of Allistair Hitchock & "The Birds"....).
Hope that helps and you have a good day on the river this week.
Cheers
