Have you ever tuned in to this radio show - it covers a wide area of the North East.

i've been out on the wear 3 times this season , once on the newfield stretch and twice on the pagebank stretch .
the fishing has been hard so far , the water is very low at the minute and is starting to weed up , it needs a bit of rain to clear it out .
as for catching trout , i've had about 3 i think and been plagued by salmon parr (atleast 10 or more the last 2 visits ).
hopefully after some fresh water in and warmer weather may should be a better month .
try spiders (teams of 3 ) , or 2 with a nymph on the point , when there is a hatch on try a klink .
trout fishing on the wear in my opinion is in decline over the last few years , clubs see it more as a salmon and seatrout river now and also by allowing maggotts to be used for trout doesn't help one bit .
i've joined the kirkby stephen club this season so will be putting most of my spare time on the eden this season .

Cheers sid, will take your advice and wait for a bit rain before i have a trip out,its a shame about the trout being in decline it should be the opposite in this day and age.

Hi Pedro,
The free section at Durham used to be good for trout, but you need to know where they are. I always had more luck there than on the BAAC waters.

Starting at the top (beside the ice-rink) trout lie in the weed in the shallows. Try to fish without wading as the trout are easily spooked here. As you go down-river ignore the deep part of this pool, right at the tail on the other side I used to find fish lying right in at the bank.

The next two pools are not great unless the water is up and coloured (they look as though they should be tho), but a little further down (opp the green) a pipe runs across the riverbed and decent trout lie along that.
My best fish from there was around 2lb. I'm sorry to say I killed it (something I would not do today).
Sit and watch some of the rises here - there used to be some real lunkers. Again, easily spooked, and usually just out of casting range for me.

Good luck -let us know how you get on.

Are you referring to the DCAC water at Shincliffe?

I was out last week and there were a lot of Grannom on the water. I don't know if they are still coming off but if they are then a couple of Grannom emerger & Pupa patterns may be worth a try.

Pedro it is till a bit early in the season for most anglers, give it another month and it will be a bit busier, although it never gets "busy". The Shincliffe stretch is probably more popular for Sea Trout fishermen, although there are some nice brownies in there.

Drop me a PM with your contact details and I'll let you know next time I am going out and if you are free we can meet up

Cam
