Default River Pang

Made my debut on the River pang nr Reading where I taken a half rod this season.

Started about 10.30, warm and sunny, plenty of insect life around and not a single fish rising! They were receptive to a small nymph though. Lost the first 4 but then managed to get a couple. Small, wild brownies. Then at about 12.00 the river started to get cloudy, then filthy and great rafts of weed started floating down. That was that, very irritating though.

Some piccies, sorry that the one of the trout is badly over exposed

Regards

Peter

The Pang used to be one of the rivers associated with wild rainbows, are there any still around?

I used to have a rod on that stretch - a decade or so ago. The weed cutting/dredging was rare, as were the visits from the mink hounds ... but both stopped the fishing. The very bottom of the beat had some big fish (mostly stocked in my day unfortunately) and the stretch above the bridge held the tricky wildies.
Enjoy the season.

I was wondering exactly the same, as I live a few hundred yards from the Pang (I think the part photographed above), and bizarrely I'm a John too!

Was just down walking by the pang, water is fairly low but saw a couple of fish rising.

Still unsure how to get hold of a permit to fish there though, never see anyone to ask. John

Did you ever find out how to get a permit for the Pang?

Yup sort of, as far as I can tell you can get permits for either the upper stretch (bradfield area), or closer into Pangbourne (a lot more expensive). Best to ask at Barn Elms Fishery, they'll be able to put you in touch the relevant people.

People seem to catch quite a lot in the stretch near me, mainly stocked rainbows but a few brownies too.

Best of luck. John

Peter, this looks a stunning stream! Shame your fishing ended the way it did though. All the best for your next outing!
