Default Cumbrian Eden system.

Ok there are only a few of us Eden stalwarts on the forum, but Mr Trout and I were in agreement today that an Eden thread might be worth starting...so here goes:

12-4-09. River Eden, Crackenthorpe.

River +50mm, clear but carrying faint peat tinge. Bright sun and air temp of 15C, water temp 12.5C. A few LDOs and plenty of grannom on the wing (the latter were egg laying females for the most part).
Bright warm conditions allowed insects to get on the wing quickly and kept potential risers down but sport was had early on to small olive nymph. Later on, Mr Trout's perseverance with the dry was rewarded with the best fish of the day at around the pound on a Griffith's gnat in brisk water. Overall sport was slow though, given a promising start.

A nice day out in fine weather -and a welcome end to the long, cold winter.

Mr Trout brings Mr Trout to hand - one of seven hard won fish today.

Hi NCA,
Nice photo of Mr, T-with-Mr, T or Mr's T?

Why do they call it "The River Eden"? Is it because, it runs through country-side a-kin to the 'Garden of Eden'? I've heard it's a beautiful area; and maybe I'll get to see it one day!

Steven, hope you wont mind a southerner, poking his nose in from time to time? would love to see more photos of the area, the river; and of-course some of it's inhabitants!!

Hope this thread finds a lot of momentum!

I'll pop back later, hopefully to see several more photos!!

Good luck

Mostyn

Hi Mostyn, it is a beautiful area, and well worthy of its name.
I think the Trout on your thread are slightly larger than ours to date, but we aim to rectify that shortly.
You are as already mentioned, very welcome up here Mostyn, look forward to meeting you.
Drop into our thread anytime you like, we need the support.!!!

Matt well done for keeping my ugly mug off the forum.
Very nice photos as always, and a most enjoyable day, thanks to you.
That is a very nice stretch of river, you showed me today.
Can you put up some of your nice pics of the river and its backdrops for Mostyn etc, I am sure they would appreciate them.
We must keep the Cumbrian end up.
Cheers S.
I should just add, five of the seven fish caught today were Matts not mine, I struggled on with the dry, whilst he used his vast experience to catch more fish.

I fished further up stream on the Kirkby Stephen waters on Sunday in very bright conditions.
Managed one 11 incher within in 10 mins of starting on a goldhead pheasent tail fished under a klink, it was then very quiet for the next 3 with hours no sign of any fish moving. We decieded to have a pot of tea while we contemlpated our next move. While stood on Eastfield Bridge watching the river eating and eating my sandwich and drinking my tea a fish started to rise in the first short pool where my first fish was caught.
So I grabed my rod and gave it ago, well it would have been rude not too.

First rise to my olive klink missed second rise missed

There must be more than one fish rising here I thought, six foot further up the pool right under the bank a rise, I placed my fly and ............................................................................................ third time lucky;
A sprightly 12 inch brownie

It was the last fish of the day but I went home happy

Hi Lakey, welcome to the forum, and welcome to this thread, your input is needed.
Sounds like you had a nice but difficult day, they just haven't come on to rise properly yet. I spend a lot of the time searching the water, and if I can't find a fish actually rising, I just fish the water, with a klink and dink.
Look forward to hearing more from your exploits, and well done on the two fish on Sunday.

No such thing as luck with you Matt, all experience sir. Some great pics as well.
TC and I went on the Winderwath stretch yesterday, Terry was unable to fish as he had cut his finger on some glass whilst gardening.
It was a stretch new to me, old TC sneaked us in across a private bit of water onto our bank of the PAA, saved a long walk.
The Grannom were coming off thick and fast, but I only saw one fish rise.
Several Olives spotted, and a few terrestials.
I tried a duo, a Goldhead Hares ear, and the Klink on its own, but never moved a fish.
It was very bright with a strong wind, but the pools we fished were fabulous bits of water, and I am at a loss to know why nothing moved.
We later had a quick look at the PAA stretch of Troutbeck at Long Marton. water very low, and terribly overgrown.
We have a favourite little run on here, below a wooden footbridge, which often produces a nice wee wildie, but the downstream wind was vicious and the small soft rod I had taken just couldn't control a fly.
I know it's a poor workman that blames his tools, but it was very awkward.
I caught the trees more often than the water, and had to call it a day, after losing the fly.
I did have more flys obviously but had lost my interest, by this point.
Hope fully Terry will be posting some photos shortly.
