Default Whitewater 2009

Well I managed to blag a few hours before work today for my first foray of the new season. I started at the double bend and fished up to the Hart. The weather was quite cool and misty and the River below the Hart confluence was carrying a tinge of colour . A merest trickle hatch of olives was evident but no rising fish were to be seen, so I fished the nymph but with no results. Unfortunately time not being on my side I didn't venture up to the top section, which with hindsight would have been a better bet. I will put in a proper stint next time.
cheers
Al.

Spent yesterday on the WW, going from the cattle crossing at the farm up to the weir pool.

Had two trout, one wild fish of about half a pound on a PTN (looked in really good condition) and a stockie of about a pound on a hare's ear nymph, both in the section just downstream of the road bridge (plus a chublet and a dace of about 6 ounces, which isn't bad for a WW dace).

I hadn't been up as far as the weir before and I found the weir pool quite difficult to fish. With the current flowing in all sort of directions it was difficult if not impossible to get any sort of reasonable drift. Any suggestions?

Managed a morning session on Sunday. Started off just below the hatchgate bridge and worked my way round the s bend - nothing showing. Drove up the the upper bridge and managed 4 trout and a small chub between the cattle crossing and the riffley section just above the upper bridge. All fish came to a size 16 gold headed hares hear the biggest was a stockie around the half pound mark - the other three were smaller wild fish. All in all an enjoyable first outing.

I nipped up on Saturday. Managed one overwintered stockie at the farm and one smallish wildie above the top bridge. The river is very clear and quite low for this time of year and I thought that the fish seemed a little unsettled. I watched a couple of that I guess were recent stockies swimming round and round pools in a confused fashion. I have also never managed a fish from the top weirpool - but I bet there must be some belters in there

Only ever managed to catch in the weir mayfly time or after with a red sedge or a pheasant tail emerger. Did catch a huge chub on a daddy there one September.

As a new member I'm looking forward to fishing the WW on Monday. I've only looked over the bridges at the moment and seen the photos on here and it looks a lovely river.

It will certainly test my casting skills (or lack thereof).

Has anyone fished the Loddon at Sindlesham Mill which is part of the ticket? And does anyone know when the working parties are? Or have they all taken place?

Lawrence - they've all taken place - usually one in each of January, February and March.

Never fished at Sindlesham Mill, but told it's not really worth it from a trouty fly fishing perspective.

PS Looks like we're both in the same village - if you're allowed out to the WW on a Sunday, say hi.

EIB,

Unfortunately I've only been allowed a pass on Monday. Still it's better than not being allowed out

Hopefully I'll see you out on the river one day.

I have fished Sindlesham Mill and would not bother again. It is course fishing water rather than game fishing water. Looks like it would be marvellous for Barbel though.

Ditto the above, I wouldn't recommend it either. As for the top weir, I am afraid I too have never caught a fish here either. The section from Holdshott farm bridge leading up to it looks nice and fishy but i've yet to catch from it. The weir pool is as you say challenging to fish and i've always wondered what a woolly ****** stripped through it would produce?? However it doesn't really count as a nymph I suppose in accordance with the rules .
cheers
Al.
