Default comorants on the kelvin

i seen 6 cormorants on the lower kelvin today and they were all doing plenty of diving in the deeper pools on the river ,every time i chased them they just moved further up the river and started again.
are these birds making a real impact on the river as their were plenty of them around last year and i hardly seen and decent trout coming of the water ,its very worrying and what action can be taken as far as rivers go regarding these pests, any help appreciated in advance.

Hi,

No airrifles please. You won't kill a cormorant with a legal limit airrifle. You will attract a fine and some unwelcome bad publicity for both anglers and legitimate airrifle users if caught.

Urbanflyman, I can't offer any help here other than to make sure they are kept on the move, sorry.
Lengthy thread about cormorants in Viewpoint. You may find something there which will help.

I am more concerned about the guys killing fish every chance they get.

In the places I fish there are still cormorants however I still managed to catch decent enough trout! :-)

if someone fishes without a permit and catches your trout it is stealing so is the cormorants get the double barrel polished up

Apply for a license from natural england if you feel that strongly about it. Cormorants can only be shot with a shotgun and when in pairs or more when license is granted.

Bit of a waste of time as the river is in Glasgow. Believe it is very difficult to get a licence to despatch these bu**ers in Scotland. Have seen plenty on the Clyde over the last few years, the most was over 30 sitting in one tree and they had turned the branches at the bottom of the tree white.

Does Scotland have a government based wildlifing service? Or will NE cover it? If so, it's still worth a call to whoever issues licenses, they are there to give advice, cormorants are classed as vermin and numbers are increasing and some organisations have targets to match.

There is NOTHING you can do about them due to one thing and another, sorry mate.
As stated, dont even think about shooting them with an air rifle and dont even think about going on to the river with a gun!!! You will have the chopper and the tactical firearms boys down on you quicker than you can Shiiit your pants!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Believe me, you will if these boys get a bead on you!!!!!!!
