Default Upper Wye (Builth) or Irfon anyone?

New trout season - anyone fish the Builth water on the Wye, or the Irfon yesterday?

Couldn't make it myself, but planning to come across next week for a cast or two . One each legit trout and grayling will see me very happy (they'll both be returned).

Hi David,

Fished the Wye for 1 1/2 hrs at Builth last Saturday and managed 1 decent Grayling and a couple of other rises to a big klinkhamer. The river was too low and clear to expect much more, with the Grayling going off the feed now and the trout still in limbo.

The Irfon was extremely low and gin clear and would have been the same yesterday AM until the rain started to find its way into it.

Prospects are looking reasonable with the gauge showing 2' 2" and the river falling, however there is more rain and strong winds forecast for the weekend so we need to keep our fingers crossed!!

Good luck,

Sabsman.

Hi Sabsman,

I was across last week on business, so didn't get the chance to wet a line, but the Irfon looked exactly as you describe.

Can't wait to get cracking next week, weather/water height permitting.

Cheers,

David

Second trip of the new Season for me yesterday - first cast, nice trout. The top of the chalet park beat is always good for a fish. the rest of this beat produced nothing, neither did the Black Pool (apart from a parr), or various fishy-looking pools all the way down to the main river.

On the main river I fished The Rocks (one ok fish, one tiddler, and lost a good fish) and the run downstream from the Island (nothing).

Some fly activity, but I saw no rises, either on the Irfon or the main river.

Hard going, but a lovely day to be out.

Sounds like it was pretty tough along both the Irfon & Wye, seeing them last week I think they are in need of a good dose of rain to freshen them up and bring the levels up a little.

The rain that is forecast for today is likely to do very little to help which is a shame really as I'll be spending the next week there trying to induce some of those brownies to open their mouths....all else fails then I'm afraid the golf clubs might have to come out!!

Sabsman.
