Default Little Avon

I popped by the Little Avon on the way home from work. As you would expect, it's very high & looks like coacoa. Does anyone know how long it'll take to fine down when this abysmal weather abates?

Normally well fishable within 48 hours of the end of the rain. That said, there's more on its way so when that will be is moot. Were the mayfly rising? If so, fish will often rise up through the mud. Were you looking at Damery? If you go up to Ozleworth it sometimes clears quicker up there.

Thanks Tony. I only saw 1 Mayfly at Damery but, to be fair I didn't stay that long. It's really frustrating driving by everydaay waiting for this bl@@dy aweful weather to clear. Thanks for the tip about Ozleworth.

splash2,

Looks like we are living some kind of weird parallel existance, working in Bristol looking hopefully at blue skies and then disappointingly looking at a brown river at Damery on the way home. I looked at the river on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and reckoned it was too coloured to try fishing. Plenty of mayflies coming off though and depending on how much rain we get it may be OK for tomorrow.

Cheers,

wjd

The weird parallel existance continues! I too had a look on Friday, Saturday & Sunday! I did actually fish the stretch above the wooden bridge on Ozleworth Brook on Friday evening; more in hope than expectation. I gave up after an hour having scratched an itch - no fish.

Saturday I did a recce by the kennels in the rain. I couldn't have got wetter if I had jumped in the river! Cold, dreary & miserable - more like November than May. Plenty of colour & the water was rattling through at a fair old pace.

Had a quick look around Damery yesterday. Same story

Hi Guys

Fished the Damery stretch tonight (Weds). River clearing and thining down. A fair few Mayfly about and lots of gnats, caught three Grayling on a GRHE and a cracking rainbow that went like a train once hooked on a Greenwells Glory dry.

As a new member of the Charfield club I have to say the quality of fishing on the Little Avon has been great fun.

Cheers

I managed an hour or so at Damery on the way home from work [I think we met as I was leaving].

Nothing much was moving for the first half an hour but after that a sporadic hatch of yellow mayfly encouraged one or two fish to rise.

I took a good brownie of about 11" in a glide under a fallen tree, quickly followed by a smaller grayling that went absolutely nuts when she realised she'd been fooled. She gave a very good account of herself & I feared she may have commited too much to the fight when she eventually came to hand; however, gentle handling & ample recovery time saw her shoot of upstream to fight another day.

Like you, I'm a new member at Charfield & I'm looking forward to getting to know this little gem of a river a little better.

No better way than to attend the bank clearing on Saturday. 9.30 at the Scout Hut / Avening Green Bridge. Usually lasts until about 12.00.

Cheers,

I'll be there. There's been no mention of what kit to bring. Any pointers?
