Default The Blithe.

I'm sorry to be so blunt, but I was busy.

I used to fish a little stretch of this fine river many years ago.

I used to catch gudgeon, gudgeon and gudgeon.

I then caught my first chub, and a trout.

That was over 30 years ago.

I have been this week for the first time since then and caught two superb chub. There are trout in this river and they eat a lot of caddis lavae at this time of the year! Have you got a particular stretch in mind as most of it is either too shallow or in private hands?
Below Uttoxeter to the reservior is definitely best, although there are trout as far north as Weston Coyney, near its source.

Thanks for the info Commo.

I was thinking about the Hanley Angling Society sections and the Fenton and District stretch.

Do you know if its got any grayling in it?

I had a quick look at the Fenton stretch on the way home today, at Lower Loxley below the mill. It's very thin water. Some flies about.

Wink Grayling

As I said, you have to pick your spots. For a lowland river it can be very shallow. It also suffers from lack of flow during dry spells. This is compounded by the lack of any tributaries of any value. Having said that it also keeps the river clean with no sewage plants along its length. It is after all, Staffordshires cleanest river, maintaining high 'B' status for all of its length. Boreholes near the source have an effect too, lowering the water table in summer.
It has had silage hits during recent years.

Have never seen or caught a grayling but I am told they exist.
It has a very healthy insect life. The fish are always in superb condition.

It is more of a chub river, with a few nice trout, the usual mix of coarse fish and some rather large pike.

Hanley membership closed, I believe. I would advise knocking on farmers doors. They like the odd drink and most are not particularly interested in fishing.

Now then, how about the forgotten river Tean.....Anyone know a stretch? Definitely grayling in there!

I'm in Hanley and Fenton so can get to either stretches. I have fished part of the Hanley bit in the past, near Gratwich, a few years ago and knew it had plenty of chub in it. In fact I used to go fly-fishing for them and used to catch plenty on dry fly. Good fun and you could literally work through a shoal.

I didn't know that it was Staffordshires cleanest river! Not much competition I suppose

It looks to be quite shallow below the mill, as Kev says above, but it has some pools and gravel bottomed sections. SO I would ahve thought that grayling would do OK in it in this area. I suppose there's only one way to find out.

The Tean! That river does look good where it runs alongside the road near the Cock Inn at Stramshall. I'm sure it's been mentioned on here before and I think I know who by! I'll PM him.

Default The Tean

I have never fished it but have it on good authority that there are plenty of fish in it. Suffered from pollution in the past. Have seen fish rising at Upper Tean.
Anyone know of a club?
