Default River Goyt, New Mills

I've walked along the Millenium Walk around the Millenium Bridge area and there are some lovely bits of river that look promising. I understand that New Mills and Disley Angling control this part of the river. Can anybody help as to what standard of the fishing can be had? How much of the river is in there control? How much and where i can get a ticket from? And probably the most important, is it worth it?

Regards

Steve

I used to fish the Sett which flows upstream from the Goyt and was also controlled by the Disley club. This was a reasonable small stream stretch suitable for 6 ft rods etc and with 6 inch trout. and the occaisional surprise at north of a pound. At one point they also stocked it with Grayling. They also had that water on the Goyt you refer to. In those days (5/6 years ago) membership was about £20 and you could get membership from the fly fishing shop in Heaton Chapel in Stockport amongst other places.

I used it to get to know the basics of river fishing and found it good fun. I had heard that they'd had a pollution incident in rtecent years, but that might be hearsay.

Good luck

Richard

The Goyt is my local river, I fish it a lot. That said, I'm not familiar with stretches that far upstream, Roman Lakes is as far up as I've been.

From what I can gather it's a reasonable water around New Mills/ Strines in terms of numbers of fish, but in terms of size, not so. It's really only a serious river after it joins the Etherow in Brabyns Park. Below here, you can catch Grayling over a pound, my best is 1.12. As for the Trout; on the fly you'll get pound fish quite regularly, perhaps even a 2. There is also a reasonable number of Rainbows, escapees, up to 2 1/2. The Brownies go much bigger than 2 pounds, but you won't get them on a fly.

Tight lines.

Hi Guys

I grew up in Compstall, close to the Goyt and Etherow.

I used to coarse fish Etherow Park and the local canals as a kid.

I looked at the goyt in Brabyns Park at Xmasbut couldn't see any fish at all.

Where exacltly are the Grayling/fish and how doyouget a permit.

It would mean a lot to me if I could fish there.

W.

I've heard that where the Goyt and the Tame meet in Stockport there are some good size fish to be caught. Does anyone have any idea of who owns/runs this stretch of water?

Ive fished the goyte a bit at new mills. I suspect the kids and maggot men have hade most of the decent fish. you can get tickets or join the club at the angling shop in waleybridge and the fly fishing shop in stockport.
