Default Rivers near West Midlands

I've been fishing still waters for a little while now but am keen to get onto some rivers. Being based in Birmingham it seems there ain't much around I guess at this stage in the season I would be looking for some grayling action, working up for the brownies next year.

I was hoping that people could shed some light on any rivers around the west midlands for fairly regular fishing (day ticket though without having to join a club) and how to find out details about them?

I've got a broken ankle at the moment so have plenty of time to line things up for when my cast comes off in a few weeks.

Ta.

Try a PM to royvs on this forum, I think he lives in that neck of the woods, and does a bit of travelling to rivers.

Hi David
Whilst Birmingham itself is a bit of a trout fishing desert... you have access to plenty of decent fishing if you are prepared to travel within 40 miles or so.

The streams and rivers of the Marches all have good trout and grayling fishing and you can access these through a number of clubs:

The Gamefishers
White Swan Piscatorials
The Pheasant Tails

You are looking at rivers such as the Clun, COund Brook, Lugg, Arrow, Monnow, Tanat etc

A bit further afield and you have the Wye Usk voucher and booking office beats.

To the north you have Derbyshire and Staffordshire - more fishing than you can shake a stick at

PM me if you want more specifics.

Default Try the Lugg

David,

There are three stretches of the Lugg that come as part of Birmingham Anglers Association membership. Here's a link to an article I wrote about the Lugg a couple of weeks back - it's coarse-based but gives some helpful information and links.

Regards,

Samson

Default Great writing + BAA

Samson,

I have just by chance read this thread and a a result spent a few minutes reading your blog. Absolutely delightful writing and pictures. I am a fly angler who came from a long coarse fishing past, which I still revisit a few times a season, and I like your style.

However, I live in Birmingham and was for a few years a member of the BAA. I got very fed up with the amount of litter and idiots that seem to go hand in hand with the club in my experience. Something I will never understand is why some anglers leave litter.

David,

In terms of your original question. I find that from South Birmingham I can get to the Welsh borders to fish the Monnow and tribs and Wye and Usk waters quite easily. In fact if you follow the M5/M50 route you can get much further than you would heading across Worcester and the A-roads in the same time. The fishing rewards are great also. I too can recommend the Gamefishers Club waters as mentioned by Tigermoth earlier. He and I met on one of their waters a few years ago and now regularly share a day's fishing.

Please PM me if you want any more info.

Hi TF... I would say not. Today has seen big downpours of rain and there was a even a dusting of snow on the Black Mountains. I'll post updates on the Monnow thread.

Have to agree with TM on the state of the rivers given that the Monnow rose quickly Sunday afternoon with run off from the mountains, and its rained a fair bit more since. Still the morning was good

Best leave it for a day or two.

Thanks guys for all your input

I'm based right in Birmingham City Centre so getting out is always a welcome prospect

I'm thinking it's best to try and get out onto some of the WUF beats, I'm traveling pretty long distances to Shropshire or over to Leicester to fish normally anyway and would much rather be on the rivers.

Unfortunately I'm completely clueless when it comes to river work having never fished one and so am still very much researching and trying to find out about it.

Ta, D.
