Default Derbyshire Wye - Peacock Stretch

I am lucky enough to be fishing the Peacock stretch of the Derbyshire Wye this Saturday for the very first time.

Does anybody have any hints or tips they would like to share?

As always any advice gratefully received.

Roger

Watch out for the dry fly police as you are only allowed to use dries as defined by them. F-fly and Klinks and anything else that fishes in or sub surface are not allowed. Try a Parachute Adams (I think that it would be "legal"), fish no heavier than 4 weight rod with a 5x leader, approach the water quietly and watch for fish before moving to another pool.

It is a beautiful part of the world and the best fishing is away from the crowds in the town. I enjoyed the beat that is back up towards Buxton a way.

Take a look at

Derbyshire

Most of the references to the Wye are to the Peacock stretch.

Arrow Fishing the Wye

if you've got time have a good browse on this thread
Mainly about the Derwent and the Wye and you'll get some good advice - there's a fellow who posts under the name of RichardW whose posts are gold-dust if you are fishing there.

and have a look at Warren's blog. He is the riverkeeper.

I fished around there last week - I'm concentrating on grayling now, as you can see from Warren's blog the trout spawning season is starting and I don't want to catch wild fish when they are in that state - so I was using big Czech nymphs fished deep (which is fine on my club's waters).

Make sure you take a camera - it's fantastic there at the moment if you are in the slightest bit interested in wildlife. and you may also want to record some of the most beautiful fish in the whole of the UK. not biased at all...

And there's a very good value Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon on the list at the Peacock at the moment..

Pop in and see Peter Arfield at the tackle shop in Bakewell. Buy some bwo's and a few sedge patterns.

Should help get you into the swing of things.

Have a great time. At this time of year your day is centred around the hour before noon and the two hours after. Then just fish on until it all stops. The evening return of spinner starts much earlier now (if it comes) than it did in high summer.

Roger

I had a day on that stretch last week, my first ever on the Wye. the river looked in great nick. I had a quick chat with the keeper who advised that they would be rising from around 11.00 - and it was 11.00 on the dot! All Wild Rainbows apart from one grayling, all on a Griffiths Gnat. Have a good day.

Bring your best copies of sedges, large dark olives, blue winged olives, needle flies and bring a good pair of polariods.
