Default fishing the river almond

hi folks, im looking to take my 4 y.o daughter bait fishing on the river almond around the livingston/mid calder area. could anyone provide any info on good parts of it to fish, what species are in it,bait, permits????????
i took her today near pumpherston-just as the almond passes under the bridge (naysmith bridge i think its called) but had no joy which didnt really matter as she just enjoyed holding the little rod i had bought her

any info would be really appreciated

Hiya, down at cramond there are a few good bits but the bait fishing finishes after the 26th august, i am not sure about further up river

There are some cracking brownies in the river and you do get half decent runs of sea trout and the odd salmon, again i am not sure how far up river they get.

The river Avon might be a bit better but you would need to find out if bait fishing is allowed, to tell you the truth i dont think anyone would mind if your kid was bait fishing any river and if they did have a problem with it then they should hang their heads in shame.

Its brilliant to hear your taking your kid fishing, get them into it young, its a great way to bond with your children

hi barker, where does the avon run mate? totally agree about a great way to bond with your kids, brilliant for them to be out fishing instead of sitting at home playing computer games all day!!
im a flyfisher myself but bait fishing will be far easier for a little one

The fishing is "not permitted" up by Livingston and is in effect FREE Cramond angling club only controls the fishing as far upstream as Kirkliston:-

There are some good brownies in the Almond and the odd salmon and sea trout makes thier way that far up. I've heard rumours of the odd grayling but I've never caught one. Used to get roach, perch and pike in some of the slower pools round Kirkliston but they were wiped out by pollution a while back.

Hi Muzza, just a sugestion, but why not try one of the local burns instead, the murieston and linehouse burns both have a healthy population of brown trout in them, great places to start your daughter of fishing, and much more of an adventure than a trip down the Almond. they are also free.

cheers

brian.

I second that - that's where I learned to fish more years ago than I care to remember. Mid Calder is as good a place to start as any, then you have the choice of those and the Almond.

muza the almond is a great river but needs a little water in it. when it,s at it,s bones i.e now a cast of wets or dry fly "pre 6th oct" if you can find somewhere to get a permit let me know. I,ve fished it for 27/28 yrs and never known of anyone to sell or ask for permits. no one owns it i think ? mid calder angling asc were responsable for that excuse they called a salmon ladder "lol" I,m led to believe that cramond angling asc are taking it over. getting back if you were at the bit where the almond goes under the green road bridge, and the lenis joins there aswell that,s mid calder you,ll find better fishing all the way down the river to the naysmith the bridge that,s been repaired. good luck
