Default River Irfon

Looking to fish the Irfon on Friday, I am led to believe it is usually fishable after heavy rain? I will be fly fishing for Trout & Grayling. Can anyone suggest best beats to try & day ticket availibility. Also current river conditions or contact numbers for same.

Depends where you go. The trout fishing on the Irfon is not great but it has plenty of grayling. The key will be the water levels, which at present are very high. The Irfon is not easy wading at the best of time. The beats at Cefnllysgwynne and Gofynne are nice to fish but it will be touch and go if they are doable on friday. If I had to stick my neck out, I'd say "No".

I agree about Gofynne...a lovely beat and actually, easy wading for the most part.

Never caught a lot of fish there but always enjoyed fishing it.

I like the "Black Pool down to the roadbridge" stretch on the Irfon Bridge Road in Builth. Plenty of trout and grayling and easy wading if the water is normal height. Unfishable at the moment (looking at the webcam on the Erwood gauge, or rather where the Erwood gauge should be if the Wye didn't currently resemble the North Sea in a Spring tide).

Challenging casting since most of the trout lie under the trees (left bank going downstream).

If you're fishing from the top down, look out for a couple of deep holes on the right side going downstream.

This stretch is on the Groe Park AC ticket - £10 a day from Nibblets the Ironmongers in Builth.

I've put off two trips already - next week may turn out better.

Cheers,

D

It's worth calling the Cammarch Hotel to check out their beats. Again, very good for grayling but some of their beats tend to be fishable when others are not.

I fished the Irfon yesterday afternoon from 2.00 until around 4.00.

Not a sniff.

Water was a lovely height (a little above SL) and slightly coloured. Fished with my usual summer leader (3lb double stregth) and small flies, but to be honest, didn't expect to catch much at that time of day in August.

I also fished the main river (Wye) opposite the Tennis Courts, not a sniff there either.

Great afternoon, but my first blank on the Irfon and/or Wye.

Dusk would have been a different story!

Well, I managed a 3-day break to fish the last of the trout season on the Irfon. Total for the 3 days was two fish, with three more lost. A bonus was the lovely grayling I caught on the Builth chalet-park stretch (about a pound and a half).

My fishing was concentrated on the stretch around the Irfon roadbridge at Builth (where my best days fishing at this time of year four seasons ago produced foutreen trout), and on the Wye too. The Wye produced one grayling and plenty of parr.

Not the best fishing, but who can complain at the weather, or being able to fish in those surroundings?

Quite frustrating really David to be lucky enough to have 3 days of fishing available when the fishing conditions were always going to make catching fish extremely difficult.

I too was also on the banks around Builth last weekend (as I am every weekend) and the low river levels, gin clear water and sunny conditions was a combination that was sure to make the fish very wary.

The noticable drop in temperature has also put the trout out of action a little, i've noticed that the percentage of grayling in my recent catches has soared dramatically which can allow for some amazing sport, especially when they turn on to the dry fly for an hour or so.

The few people I spoke to on the banks had mixed catches really, a group of 4 anglers who had been on the Wye all day saturday seemed to find some nice grayling on the dry (1 of them had caught about 20), while another club member who fishes the stretch frequently had struggled on the Wye but had caught well earlier on the Irfon (including a 2lb chub). Just proves the point of right place, right time.

The Irfon can be extremely hard when it runs low and clear and I don't consider it to have the head of trout that the main river has, though this time of the year it can be superb if you find the grayling. I have one of the chalets on the banks of the Irfon but find it hard not to head for the Wye.

You say you caught your big grayling from the chalet waters, was it above or below the Larder Pool?

Mick.
