Default Sava Bohinjka, Bled, Slovenia

This is going to be an unashamed plug for Slovenia and the Sava Bohinjka!

I had been subtly suggesting Slovenia as a holiday destination for some time but by a stroke of good fortune one of my wife's staff members had been to Bled and convinced her of its beauty and ideal location (must buy her flowers!) Now this wasn't to be a fishing expedition - it was to be our joint holiday but before departure I had 'negotiated' two days fishing (this later became three!)

Particular thanks to Royvs for suggesting that I contact Fauna Bled - a very well stocked, helpful and enthusiastic fly shop in Bled - where Matej arranged a guided half day for me -

So, what was it like? An over used word but one I feel justified in using when applied to the Sava Bohinjka - AWESOME!

To give a flavour of the location -

The water, from a distance looks much like a bottle of Saphire Gin - up close - just gin! So clear in fact that I'll not consider our UK chalk streams to clear in the future.

Sight fishing with upstream nymphs and dries I caught 60+ fish in my three days. And in case you're wondering, no, none of these images have been 'Photoshopped'.

Fabulous photos Lighthouse.
Are the rainbows wild or are they from some of the stocked tophy sections?
Like many on this site I have toyed with the idea of a Slovenian fishing trip and you have finally swung it for me next year.

I didn't fish the 'Trophy' section but they do stock the rainbows at, I was told, around 25cm. They clearly do well and breed - I had a good number of small ones around 20cm or so and ones that had grown on to over 1.5kg. They are in sparkling condition and the larger ones are a real handful in the cold, clear water.

Don't forget, there's also the Soca Valley - just to tease you a little more!

Yes, caught some that still retained their parr markings. Don't forget that this is an Alpine environment - much like the natural environment of the original Shasta and Iridius rainbow strains.

Are there self sustaining rainbows then, of the non stocked variety?

I believe so. There were a few that I caught that had a noticeably paler colouration - a pale olive green, very solid, muscular fish that gave every impression of being wild progeny.

Lovely glacial 'tinge' to the Soca.

Did you catch any of it's famed marbled trout?
