Default Day ticket trout river near Abergavenny?

Will be staying in Patrishow, north Abergavenny next week. Any suggestions for decent day ticket river trout fishing in the area?

Would Wye & Usk Foundation waters be the best bet?

Many thanks!

I'm not an expert but the WUF waters are excellent, especially the Monnow at Longtown. You could try the Hondhu but I've yet to catch after 3 visits....mind you that's more to do with me being inept than the river being poor!!

Regards

Peter

Crickhowell and District AA have the fishing on the Usk immediately above Lanfoist Bridge (the Red Barn beat), but they no longer issue day tickets, which is a great pity. I think that there are some tickets for the town water between the two bridges available, not sure about the outlet.

The Usk Town Water is a good day ticket at £14, available from Jean Williams in Sweets Tackle shop in Usk.

The WUF passport waters on the Monnow and Honddu are all good. You will need a 7ft rod and chest waders.

The WUF also has plenty of booking office beats on the Usk. These are more expensive. Bridge Meadow is Ok for and evenings fishing. I have fished some of the beats above Crickhowell and they have been excellent. Chest waders and a 9ft rod are ideal.

Good luck,

wjd

Hi Windknotter...
Plenty of good advice here already. One or two further thoughts for you....

The weather has been shocking of late and the rivers will be brown and high. They certainly are this weekend

The first to clear will be the Honddu, which is 7ft/7ft 6 territory. All of the beats available through WUF are belters. Look back through the Monnow thread for advice.

The Monnow itself is available at Longtown on a WUF ticket but do not expect it to be easy this time of year. The water will drop back quickly and the best time will be morning and then evenings. You will have fun finding the best fishing Wade stealthily and look where it looks least likely

If you want something larger to go at, then there is shed loads of fishing on the Usk and you have already had plenty of pointers.
PM me if you want more details.
Best
Dave

The WUF Honddu beats will be on your door step if you are staying at Patrishow. Be sure to spend some time looking around the church at Patrishow too.

Some good advice from all so far, river very high at moment but clearing nicely.
TM has nailed the timings stay late and fish early and im talking 4.30am onwards when you will find the fish rising to spinners.
Abergavenny Town water day tickets are available from Keith Price Garage on Merthyr Road.
Pm me if you need any further help!
