Default Aysgarth River Ure: Salmon/Sea trout

I didn't know where to put this thread, so you can move it to the right one if you like......

I am just curious as to whether these fish are showing above Aysgarth.

What flies and sizes should I be fishing with? Info would be of great help.

Surely they must be able to swim up if there's plenty of water in the river?!

Eh? If there was that much in the river I reckon you'd need a boat to get there...

There are a couple of falls below the bridge that IMHO are too high for a Salmon to jump(but I could be wrong ).Salmon do not swim up a waterfall in spate, they have to jump then swim.I know of a couple of big waterfalls in Scotland that Salmon surmount.but when you look closely there are small pockets of calm water half way or a third way up. rather than a 10' straight jump.

I was looking forward to fishing for migratory fish between Worton and Aysgarth, but I guess I won't be seeing any of the fish there. I suppose I'll have to stick to the River Ribble at Long Preston. Where the water is deep and slow and very 'featureless'!!!

Slightly off topic but I thought I'd ask seeing as you're familiar with the Ribble.
Many years ago, there used to be plenty of chub and pike in the middle stretch between Settle and L.P. Nowadays, the flow is very different and nobody seems to coarse fish that stretch of the river at all.
Any idea what's in it - or even if the chub and pike are still there?

I have read reports from the internet that there are chub near Long Preston there but are declining in numbers. Probably due to the environment and food.

From what I have read in a booklet where you park the car at the entrance there are some trout and grayling. The booklet doesn't say anything about pike being there.

There are some big barbel about around the 12lb mark on the south side of Long Preston.

I have only fished the Bradford City AA stretch twice and never caught anything.

I'm just thinking about spinning there sometime.

I had a go with my lure rod on the Settle stretch last year and blanked with all my favourite chub and pike catchers. Only a small brownie on an ondex 3 saved the day.
I can't believe thre's nothing in there; some of the pools and glides as the Ribble meanders downstream from Settle look really encouraging. Might give it another go myself over the summer.

Just been to Long Preston today. I only lasted about 10 minutes becuase it started thundering and it poured it down so I drove home in awful weather, travelling at around 30 mph because it was sooo bad!

I bought a new spinning rod and thought I might try it out. The rod is wonderful. I will be going back when it isn't raining to try it out for longer and hopefully catch a brownie or something else.

I looked at the booklet and no one has fished the Bradford City stretch since May this year!
