Default Advice for The Tummel at Pitlochry

Family booked a last minute holiday beginning of August at Milton of Fonab caravan site. Tummel flows through the grounds. Have not fished here (river) for some years. Just wondered what tactics, patterns to employ. Remember the Tourist Board sold day tickets for further down the river which were very reasonable then. That still the same ? Also looking for a loch where I can take a novice too that he would have a good chance of catching a few wee trouties.
Thanks in anticipation.

Highlander,
I fish the opposite bank to the campsite for salmon. The grilse are just starting to come in numbers now. They will still be running in August if you like that sort of thing; single handed rod will be fine.

As far as lochs go, a boat on Loch Bhac is very pleasant and there are lots of rainbows in the 1lb-ish bracket. Pitlochry Tourist Office will have details.

If you want further details let me know. Nick Mitchell has a tackle shop in Pitlochry-he can advise you.

Default Thoughts on the Tummel

Just got back today. Did not fish much as I spent most of my time teaching a raw beginner to do so.
Booked two day tickets from the tourist board. At £5 per day I thought very good value for money. Only actually fished a few hours myself, just sat & watched & took in the scenery which is superb.
One thing I will comment on.
It's a big river, a very big river. I was slightly overawed at first. My wee 4wt whilst great for fishing pockets of water with a dry was inadequate I felt.
Not for line size but for length. Many of the Trout holding areas were "far & fine" off. Now what I need to get myself is a long 10ft 4/5wt. That would be just about right for me. It is a difficult river to fish with many "steamy" stony sections inter spaced with deep holes that held the better Trout.Wading is a problem & one has to be very careful or it would be easy to "take a tumble. Problem was the small fish that attacked my wee spiders before a better fish had a chance. Still great sport on light tackle. Saw some Salmon show & there was a shoal of nice fish in the observation chamber at the dam, all fresh too, but as my ticket only covered Trout & Grayling I stuck with that but was tempted to try for them as no one else was about. The tackle shop in town is "Shut" no reason but I suspect there has been a problem as last year when I was up it was closed too but still stocked & a build up of letters at the door. A sign says tackle available at Ballinluig but the stuff I saw there was minimal to say the least. Still wheted my appitite to go back & spend a full day exploring the river.
One thing I felt bad about was a guy I met who asked my advice, which was scant to say the least but he commented he was practicing for a competition so that did not go down well with me. I felt bad after that I did not spend some time with him & I was a bit curt which was really silly of me.
Still

PS Meant to say managed an evening out myself of Loch Kinadochy (sp). Good fun with wee wild bronnies. Places like this convince me that Browns really are the best. A wee size 12 Soldier Palmer on the bob was the top fly, most around 3 to the pound but a better fish of around 1.1/2lb took my Invicta. Yes a nice wee session

Highlander,
I'm glad you enjoyed your trip on the Tummel. You are right about the wading-the stones are large and it is easy to lose your footing. We are still waiting for the grilse to come up in numbers-they appear to be stuck on the low to mid stretches of the Tay. Rain needed.

Mitchells shop did close about a week or two ago to my surprise, but I hope it will be taken over again soon.

You mentioned Kinardorchy and did well to catch a 1.5lber. Its a lovely setting with Schiehallion towering above.
I trust you will be back with a rod to tackle the salmon sometime soon!

Oh I enjoyed it alright, the river is magnificent but difficult to fish. Still a few trips should get me more familiar with it. I intend to make it a yearly visit.
As I said saw a few Salmon jumping mainly below dam but only saw one guy fishing & he was playing to the crowd (tourist photos)They were releasing compensation water early last week so river was up a few inches so maybe that "spruced them up a bit". Bigger fish from Kinadochy (get the spelling right)(at last? I was right first time then)) was probably nearer 1.1/4 than what I originally said. Came as quite a surprize as it was a lot different from the small ones I was catching. A larger male fish with quite a big head. Probably taken a like to it's smaller brethren.
Yes you have a nice river up there by the way. We have booked Milton of Fonab again for next year same time so here's hoping.

Mitchells closed for good eh!, i wonder who got the big Rapala that used to hang outside?
After a few beers in the Fishers,, i often fancied going along to see if i could get it off its mounts and give it a cast
