Default River Ribble at Settle

Had a day on the Ribble at Settle on Saturday and was disappointed. The river is running at a very low level and as a result the fishing is tough. We still managed to catch (small) fish but I wouldn't recommend fishing there until it has seen some serious rain !

Regards

Drfrank

With many a silvery waterbreak
Above the golden gravel,

And draw them all along, and flow
To join the brimming river,
For men may come and men may go,
But I go on for ever.

My neck of the woods around Sawley has been fishing ok, but is - like everywhere else in the catchment - snotted up with weed and needs a good flush. I've found the key is to fish very late on with dries and look for a caddis or BWO hatch as the conventional searching methods are just not on at the moment. I've fished settle on low water and can sympathise with your plight - it certainly isn't easy and gives its best with a few exta inches.....

I fished the Ribble near Mitton on Saturday 31 May, and was really surprised at the low level of the water. There was also a lot of very thick clumpy weed that the flies kept dredging up and the flow rate seemed very slow. There were quite a few anglers out on the beat, and I ddn't see anyone catching. However, I managed a really nice brownie, just as it was turning dusk. I managed to pick up the odd salmon parr as well. No sign of any rises or any other fish.

It seems ironic as we have had some days of quite heavy rain, but I think it will need quite a prolonged spell of rain in the upper waters to get things moving.

You only have to look at recent pictures of stocks res at slaidburn to see how much water is needed. Stocks is quite low.

Was going to fish the ribble Today
River Ribble and Hodder both peaty.
The river Hodder will need a lot more water in stocks before it lifts Stocks is still on its bones.
Anyone who knows stocks will tell you willow island is now part of the northern shallows coast line
The Ribble has lifted but will need more water as well to let the salmon through in any number
