Default West Country Rivers

Isn’t it about time we had a West Country rivers thread. A thread celebrating of our small quick rivers and smaller quicker trout.
There are a few of us spread out across Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and west Dorset*, surely someone must be catching something!

*east of Weymouth doesn‘t count as West Country in my book, too expensive for a start!

Tuesday I had an afternoon on the Angling2000 scheme fishing the Torridge above Kismeldon Bridge.
Tis only a little river up there

I had a peek in the box where you post the tokens and the beat was fished on the Sunday and Monday before I was there so it must be proving fairly popular. That said judging by the lack of bank disturbance it didn’t look like anyone had fished the top half of the beat recently. But then again the top half is badly overgrown and will be nearly impossible to fish in two weeks time. It’s definitely a get in the water and wade beat.

I was hoping for some mayfly but I think I was a bit too early, one or two were hatching all day but nowt looked at them. The main interest was to the black gnat. There is a mass of nymph under the stones so on a warmer day it should see good hatches.

I got the grand total of eight. To be honest if they were all scrapped together into one fish they would have gone about a pound I expect all the big ones were caught on Sunday and Monday

What a grand idea Andy.

I fished the River Bray yesterday for a few hours.

I arrived to be greeted with a cold east wind and a very clear river but there were a couple of fish rising so went back to the van to set up.

I set up with my favourite set up of a klink and a tungsten bead hares ear and worked my way up a part of the river that looks just like a wessex chalkstream.

Fish were happy to come to the nymph but hard to encourage to rise to the dry.

The fish were only small but all were wild

As the day progressed it got a bit warmer so off came the nymph and i stuck to a dry for the rest of the time.

I ended up with over 20 fish most very small but 5 or 6 over 8"

What fishing the westcountry rivers are all about

Interesting article in "The Field" (June edition) on Devon rivers - and some tackle reviews by Accidental.

Proper job Toby!

Where on the bray were you fishing, its a river I've never fished.

This afternoon I had an invite to the Axe, what it is to be well connected

For once the chilly east wind died down and it was shirt sleeve weather down in the valley. Millions of black gnat on the water along with some yellow sally stone flies, a few upwings of one sort or another and a steady trickle of mayfly A french partridge mayfly seemed to do the trick although some of the fish merely slashed at it. Hopefully the hatch should get better over the next week or so. I ended the afternoon with 15, none less than 7" and four around 10"-12". Some of the best trout fishing I've seen for some years on the Axe.

Sounds like you had a bit of fun Andy.

The fish were going made last Monday on the Axe when i was out for the Seatrout.

I fished the Tone today for a hour around midday and managed to land 3 but missed 4 or 5 rises

The fish were very active and it was nice to be able to see fish and cast to them.

My client did quite well on Friday for his first time trying to catch a wild brown trout on the Teign.
The fish were being a bit 'picky' but the adams proved to be the fly to fish with that day.
I went down myself on Saturday and unusually for the Teign we were getting a good mayfly hatch, although i believe they were too 'scared' to try the natural or the immitation but were taking olives, especially the emerger patterns.
The sea trout fishing has been very good this year compared to the recent seasons.
Sorry no pics i was too busy trying to put my client in the right place but i will try to get some from his father who took some during the day.
Cheers
Richard

I think the Torridge fish were 'scared' of the mayfly last week, it's odd how they take a while to get going on them.
I think you've posted somewhere that you fish the Crediton waters. Do they still have their Taw beat and if so do you know if the mayfly is hatching there, I occasionally fish the club below (Brushford-Hawkridge bridge). I guess today's rain will put it out of action for a few days.

Cheers

Andy

Hi Andy
Check out the website at http://www.fly-fishing-club.co.uk/
I would assume the mayfly are hatching, but this rain will throw things out for a few days.
Cheers
Richard

Richard,
Thanks for the link, I'll probably head over that way next week if the weather settles.
