Default River Aire.

Anyone fished the Aire at Gargrave in West Yorkshire? I'm in a club that has a small stretch of the river immediately upstream from Gargrave. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Gaz

I'm with Bradford City AA and they have a very long stretch from the weir in Gargrave all the way down to the A59.

I haven't fished the water at Gargrave. But my father and I are going to soon. I'm sure small spiders, nymphs and dries will work fine to catch the fish.

There's a rainbow trout farm beside the river above Gargrave, it's good fun catching the escapee rainbows for a change, but they are considered vermin and should be killed, according to the rules.

Hi

I fish the stretch from Gargrave down fairly frequently.

The fishing is good with good sized trout and grayling. Most of the grayling I catch seem to be 12" or bigger the trout are more varied. Most of the time the water is very clear (except when cows milking - see below) and I have had the pleasure of sight fishing at close quarters many times here.

There can be quite impressive hatches. I was their earlier in the week and there were LDO's, upright olives, Mayfly in good numbers, sedge, hawthorn, the odd yellow may dun, the usual midges and caenis (not absolutely sure about caenis but they were very small and white). I had lots of action all day much of it to dry fly. I took 2 fish of about 13" home and one had cased caddis in its stomach almost exclusively , the other had mostly small olives.

The problem with this stretch is that the dairy farm at Gargrave seem to wash out their milking stalls into the river. At least whenever the cattle head up to be milked the water goes dirty. This dirt silts up the bottom a bit and weed thrives on it, as soon as the weather gets warm its a bit of a mess. You will be better off on your stretch above Gargrave.

Joel....... is your stretch of the river stocked? just curious. I'm hoping to give my bit a go tomorrow. No fish stocked here other than escapees'.
