Default Fly fishing info needed for the river wharfe pool-in-wharfedale

Hi! i am tempted to give the wharfe a go in the pool-in-wharfedale area which is controlled by Leeds & District ASA. apparantly there is about 3 miles of fishing available both upstream & downstream from road bridge. i have heard that it is good fly fishing for grayling & only £4 per day ticket. also does anybody know if there are any browns there to be caught too?

I would be greatful for any info or solid advice on this area & whether it is worthwile fishing as it is a 70 mile trip each way for me, I would also appreciate any info on the kind of area that it is & what parking is like there too!

Thanks for your time & I look forward to any replies with Info!

Hi NailedMains,

70 miles each way..where do you live? You can get a ticket from the Shell Garage by the bridge. I have spoken to my mate who knows it well and he says it is good for at least .75 miles up and downstream of the bridge. Apparently there is a weit upstream of bridge and he says that the water is too slow and deep there to fish well with fly so leave to the maggot boys. It is not worth fishing in his opinion above .35m on the Environment Agency Guage for Pool so keep an eye on that. It goes down as far as Arthington Viaduct and after that is the Huby stretch which Oliver Edwards fishes on. There are good stocks of both Trout and Grayling. The Grannom hatch on Wharfe the last few years in April has been phenominal and all the usual suspects will hatch on the Pool water so LDO, Yellow May Duns,BWO and Pale Wateries are all present. In the Autumn there will be good Willow and Needle Fly hatches(they are good from Huby all the way up to and beyond Ilkley)

Yeah it's a nice respectable area. Suggest you look at on Google Maps. There is loads of parking on the road between the garage and the river

Not sure. There is a guage at Grassington for EA which says "The typical river level range for this location is between 0.00 metres and 1.50 metres" so if you say (low) Summer level is 0.00 it should be fine at .30 to .40m(may be pushing it at .40m though). I know this stretch though have not fished it much. I do know when it is at .40m at Ilkley though it is almost spot on for above Kettlewell but that is supposed to be the top limit for Grayling(or used to be).

ok so looked at grassington and it states the current level is 0.32 metres if it stays around this level & no more than 0.40maximum then it should be good for fishing, sorry to be a nuisance but this river level business is all new to me, dont get to fish the rivers as much as i would like to due to the area i live in not having any rivers worth fly fishing. i do appreciate the help & advice you have given too! thanks very much!
