Yesterday I fished the Möhne river with fellow flyfishers Ben and Robert.
In the night before the trip a thunderstorm signed in the end of a period of warm
sunny weather.
When we assembled early morning for the drive to Germany we had mixed feelings
about the day’s fishing.
Rains meant flooding and we feared the Möhne would carry high and stained waters.
On arrival things looked not as bad as expected..
I was dropped at the end of the stretch at the village of Völlinghausen while the other
guys tried their luck farther upstream.
Robert had spotted some fish at my spot when he stood on the bridge so I was confident I would catch some fish, it turned out I was right.

Fish nr 1, a Brooktrout or Bachsaibling in German.
Upstream of the bridge a Brook trout took the nymph..
A couple of minutes later a Chub grabbed the Czech nymph I was fishing.

Chub.
I decided to wade upstream and saw several fish moving in in the water.
I fished the nymph close to the bank and hooked a brown trout that jumped all over
the place.
This was no normal trout since it lacked the usual red spots.
According to the owner of the local tackle shop store it was a subspecies of the brown
Trout that lived in the deep lake downstream from the river.
In spring these fish would venture up river to spawn and apparently I had hooked
one of the smaller specimens.

Seeforelle (brown trout subspecies)
As I ventured upstream I could nail one more “Seeforelle” and another Chub.
In the afternoon we met at the restaurant on the river for a meal and then
visited the tackle shop to pay for our licenses and stock up in gear.
After visiting the stop I did a rerun of the stretch I fished in the morning while
Ben and Robert went further upstream.

Möhne river.
I saw insects on the water so I tried some dry fishing but the rain kept the
fish down.
I hooked and lost one smaller fish while wading upstream.
One of the more spectacular insects around was a sort of yellow mayfly which the locals
called “Steinklammerer” (Stoneclinger).

Steinklammerer.
When I arrived at the middle section of the stream I met the other guys again who
had been successful in catching brown trout and brook trout on dry flies and streamer.
They had found a section with big- and rising fish.
I spend the evening casting to a brown trout that continuously rose to the surface.
I emptied my dry fly box to nail that fish but it just would not take a look at the flies
I presented, that’s fishing I guess.
At least I had caught my share of fish on this rather rainy and windy day.
I am sure I am going to visit the Möhne river a couple times more this year.
