Thumbs up A good weekend down on the Irfon

Back last night from fishing the Irfon with a group of 7 anglers. Great weekend loads of fish, best Brownie around the 2lb mark and a couple of Grayling around the 2.5 to 3lb mark. We had around 120 fish between us, nearly all the Grayling above 1lb. We stopped at the Cammarch hotel, great place, great hospitality, good food, and more importantly good local beer. If you've never fished the Irfon its well worth a chuck, its one of the best Grayling rivers I've ever fished, I've had a trip down around Sept/Oct for the past 3 years and never been dissapointed.

Sounds like a good weekend Gary - if you don't mind me asking which stretch did you fish mate?

Its a fantastic little river - a friend of mine found a 25lb+ spawned hen salmon dead, way above the Cammarch a few years ago. You will be pleased to hear that in Jan 2010 the WUF set about a 1.6 million euro project to restore the Irfon ..... it will take 4 years to complete

If you catch the Irfon right then it can be very special, last weekend would have found plenty of water in there and the perfect time of the year to target both the large Grayling and Brownies which can be found along that stretch.

The Cammarch hotel is a great base for some quality fishing in the area and as you say the hospitality there would be hard to beat anywhere.

SF...I do hope the project (ISAC) being carried out by the W&UF achieves its targets to reduce the acidification levels in the Irfon, my personal monitoring over the last few years on the lower river has shown a definite up turn in the invertebrate life there so hopefully this in time will result in a river able to sustain greater numbers of fish.

Mick.

Yes loss of Industry has seen a decline in acid rain over the period of the late 90's onward, all we need now is less people and less demand on the countryside and all will be well .....

Rob,
Its the water controlled by the Cammarch hotel, they have 3 beats on the river all close to the hotel, they also now have access to other beats in the area, You can also book the beats via the WUF passport scheme. Its good value at £12 per day.
Regards,
Gary.

I would agree its a water that holds some quality fish hand have been guiding on it since the Wye and Usk Foundation Passport scheme took it on and did quite some work putting it on the fishing map for them, I was fishing it for over a decade before that, and three different owners

what I would say to the un initiated it is not the easiest bit of water to get around except for one stretch and a few pools here and there it has deep channels some time a mater of feet wide and well over your head in depth which unless its at summer low condition you will not see

This is not a plug for my services, just take care when wading and don’t let me have to say I told you so!

Did I hear a rumour that the Cammarch is now under different management from about 4 years ago?

When I last stayed there, around that time, the decor was quite unusual (one detail that sticks in my mind was the laminated printouts of Egyptian deities pinned to the walls to give the Egyptian Room its theme!) For me, like most fishermen at the end of a long day on the river, anywhere warmer and drier than a wet tent is a bonus... but travelling companions sometimes demand, errm, higher standards

Theo

PS: Kim is right about some of those drop-offs... think rock shelves suddenly going 10 feet straight down, 2 feet off the bank... but they make nice deep holes for big grayling to live in!

Hi Theo,
Its been run by a lady called Catherine now and re-decorated and there's even a bar been put in. We ate in the hotel on the Saturday night and the food was spot on, well worth a visit.
Gary.
