Default Derwent conditions

I am in Belper for the weekend and was hoping to get a couple of hours seeking out Derwent grayling.

Given the rain is there any chance of any reasonable fishing with either fly or bait this weekend? If so any info regarding day ticket water would be welcome.

The Derbyshire thread is very usefull for information like this. I would recommended the Derwent Hotel water at Whatstandall good value day ticket.

http://www.thederwenthotel.co.uk/35344.html

Try Matlock AC's water in the middle of Matlock bath, not really fly water more suited to centre pin & float.

The water level in the Derwent is not looking good however for the weekend.

Belper AC may do day tickets, try at Andy's Tackle in Belper

No chance, sorry. You would be advised to keep away from the river this weekend let alone try and catch fish. I am reminded why the Derwent is so named.
Der...went; from the norse meaning 'dirty...water.'
The Wye, a famous trib, also takes its name from the norse, meaning; 'fantastic river under superb management and being very well cared for.'

Default derwent

the real meaning of Derwent.

on Age Celtic settlements dating from around 400BC are suggested by some physical evidence and local place names. “Chevin”, the name of a hill dominating the north of the village, stems from the Celtic Language as does the name “Derwent, meaning river abounding with oak trees.

i will go with the celts thank you very much
i beleave them filthy vikings only got down as
far as rowsley

Definition of Wye
n. 1. The letter Y.
2. A kind of crotch. See Y, n. (a).

unwashed no doubt (see above)

Thanks all for your information on river conditions and the etymology....

I'm going to be in the area for the weekend so have stuck the tackle in the back of the car but am thinking more along the lines of a walk along the river and dipping a bunch of red maggots into any slacks to see what happens.

Some trotting or nymphing for grayling would have been nice but any time spent on or near a river is worth having.

Derwent was several feet up and pushing through like a train. With the help of the owner of Belper Tackle & Gun, managed to find some slack water near the bridge and much to the amusement of a couple of local anglers decided to give it a go. Feeder/red maggot was the only way to go and managed to extract two nice grayling, a roach and a tiny Perch in the hour and a half I was there.

If you are in the area do pop in to Belper Tackle and Gun as they couldn't be more helpful and the shop is a real treat.
