Default River Coln, Fairford?

Hi,

Has anyone fished the Bull stretch on the Coln recently, was thinking about going down tomorrow? Any news on the river and how it's fishing would be great.

Thanks

Have you tried the coln at Coln St Aldwyns? I like this beat as there are some very good holding pools, good for when it is either very hot or very cold. you can get a ticket from the estate office or from JD sports in Cirencester.

Some good grayling coming out on various bugs, you can't beat a shrimp though. It's quite overgrown in places but if you don't mind that some cracking small pools are worth the effort.

Hi there,

Thanks for the advice. Went on the Coln today, had two grayling and several lost flies. Really enjoyed fishing the water as it's a little bit difficult and so a bit of a challenge. Was rather busy with people walking past though!

I certainly intend to fish there again.

Thanks again

This is a late post, as I've just got back from a week in north Wiltshire. I had an enjoyable day on the Bull stretch on Christmas Eve. Unfortunately, I didn't land anything, though had spirited fights with numerous fish, mostly trout. It seems the fish are rather educated and skilled at throwing a hook.

I also lost a good few flies, which I guess is par for the course on a water of this type. I didn't find any one type of more effective than another. I fished a small hare's ear nymph and got lots of attention. I used a wide range of smallish dry flies - pretty much whatever was in the box - and they were all taken with enthusiasm.

I'll have another go when I'm visiting the in-laws next year.

Default Coln Update

Hi,

Was down on the Coln at Fairford today. The water is much clearer now than it was just before the New Year. The predicted strong winds didn't materalise, which was nice. I saw plenty of fish but they all refused to take any of my offerings.

Happy New Year.

They can be like that some days and it gets a tad frustrating! Try drifting your nymph right on their nose then lift it. Olive shrimps and czech nymphs work well.

Smile Coln today.

Went down to the stretch of the Coln owned by the Bull in
Fairford today. Didn't go fishing as unfortunately i didn't have time. The river is fairly high at the moment with a good amount of colour. However, it was the busiest i've seen the stretch recently, with about five guys fishing. Fishing seemed a little slow from what i gathered from the guys there, although i was only there in the morning. Here's hoping for a bit less rain this week!
