Steve,

I, together with my Brother, fished from The Two Bridges hotel section a couple of weeks ago and had a great afternoon. It was my Brother's second time for Trout fishing.
We used my general flies and were successful on Para Adam's, Paraduns and F flies in 16 & 18. We found that fishing the Dry was more than sufficient.

Have a great time.

Hi Steve,

I'd agree with the other posts in sizes. 16 to 20 is perfect and as Blithfield2 says ( Hi Steve!) general patterns work best. We tie on just about anything from F Flies, terrestrials to Royal Wulffs in faster water and pretty much everything has worked. The fish will travel a fair way to have a look at a fly and will usually hit it.

If you haven't fished there before I would try and keep out of the water as much as possible and either the first or second shot into each pool will tend to be the "money shot". The great thing is that there is so much water to explore you can cover plenty in a day.

Hope you enjoy it!

Pete

All been covered really.
Dries smaller then a 16, scruffy and general work well in darker colours.
Sometimes a longer rod helps line control.
Keep moving and you will catch fish.

You could consider fishing with spiders - they do work here.

Oddly enough, I have it in mind to tie and fish some spiders.

I only fish the Duchy, and fish it most days of the week, although sea trout has been the order of the last few weeks.

I would echo what the others have said above, Black Gnat, Blue Upright.... I know Richard may think it bonkers but even a Devon Half Stone will pull a fish out along with a March Brown at this time of year. GRHE Nymph (Dark with tungsten bead) works well, and for Bellever and Hexworthy areas I have found Lunns / orange spinners or Pheasant tail's are a must as spinners fill the air

I am coming around to the oipinion that many moorland brownies are fairly opportunist and will take most things, many turn to eating fry and most of the larger trout seem to be hooked at night while ST fishing - I hooked a thing trhat was 7 inches long the other day that had attacked my 1 1/4 inch tube!

Size and colour are the most important factors - I keep on saying it, so I shall say it once more (*): You never hear anyone coming away from the Duchy waters saying ' I wish I had used a larger fly'. 14 through to 20 and as Pete T says, a couple of casts and move on, dont flog it, the good fish will surprise you after 1 or 2 casts

All the very best,

DN

PS - If you would like to pm me some details I would (time permitting) gladly meet up and point you in the right direction for access / egress points and places of interest / eating / drinking etc.

Thumbs up Re: Duchy waters

Update on our "trip"

Fished the Duchy waters yesterday , 11th Aug , we got our day ticket at Postbridge PO , then headed to 2 Bridges and fished the West Dart , it was Extreme fishing (weather wise) , windy as F**k , sheets of rain coming down , even Robson would agree , if he was there . We struggled and only caught a couple all morning , we regrouped over lunch then decided to fish the east Dart in the afternoon .

The East Dart in the afternoon was completely different , no wind , light showers , nearly sunny , plenty of fish caught , mainly on dries , enjoyable afternoon

conclusion

will return , hopefully in September
use small dries , i was using 22`s
move location if weather is bad in your chosen location , you will be surprised
