Default Grayling on river Wear

Hi all ,
has anyone had any success on the river Wear this season as far as grayling are concerned ?

although its my local river and have fished it for nearly 30 years the last 2 years i've only had little success when it comes to grayling .

normally i only target browns using spiders and nymphs but have had some nice grayling without fishing for them .

but over the past 2 seasons i think i can count on one hand how many grayling i've caught , so i'm wondering if the Wears population of grayling is dwindling ???

if i'm wrong and anyone has had some good grayling these past 2 seasons what would be the best tactics to use during the winter ie- flys , leader length, upstream , downstream , down and across , fast runs , slow glides , pools etc .

thanks in advance for any advice .

oh and a merry xmas to you all !

I've not heard of many being caught this year on the Durham City AC stretch of and those that have been caught, the ones I know of have been caught accidentally, usually on maggot/feeder.

There were 3000 put in the Browney at Lanchester about a year back though, so some of those should make their way into the Wear at some point.

yeah heard the same about the stocking , were they stocked into the browney so they would have a better chance of survival/growth ?
pobably better to stick them in the browney than the Wear as the Wear can have some major floods through the autumn and winter months .

Sid,

I've had some decent grayling this last season on the Wear above Durham,
late on during October and November most were taken on Klinks or small
Griffiths Gnats, quite a few on czech nymphs in the faster water, one being a
decent fish late October, close to 3lbs.

RE: the Browney - I'd heard that they were hoping to have most of the
fish stocked to stay in this small river, although like 'yorkio' said some
will end up in the Wear.

However I tend to find that come January they are more difficult to
locate, unlike other local rivers that still fish well in January and February.

Are you still fishing Page Bank ?

Wink

Hi wildtrout ,

yeah still fishing page bank and tudhoe ,although due to work commitments , weather and water level i didn't get out as much as i'd of liked to .

never fished newfield or even brockbank this year but hoping to get out much more next season .

my club has increased the size limit upto 12" which can only be good as far as sport goes . some kids were going down and fishing where stocking had taken place days before and catching them on maggotts before they had time to spread throughout the river .

sport was still good last year and i had some decent sized trout with the majority being wild .

did you get out much this year ? much success ?

last week i walked from durham along the river to my home in tudhoe and the river at shincliffe hall looked nice , i think it belonged to durham angling club, some nice runs .
