Default Affordable trout river near to London

Apologies for bringing up a question that has probably been asked many times before.

I am looking for advice on an affordable (£20-£50 per day) trout stream/river that is less than 1.5 hours on a train from London. (preferably where I can then bike from station to river)

I do not want to go to still waters but want to escape London for the day and then head back on the train.

Prefer rivers that have been lightly stocked but also enjoy fishing for small wild brownies. (I normally fish a 3 or 4 weight rod)

Any advice would be helpful (even if it pointing out another thread where similar question has been raised)

Please help because being stuck in London and not being able to fish is torture.

Thanks for your help.

If you fancy a go on the Test for grayling in the autumn it will cost £30-40 a day. If you can go midweek I can pick you up and drop you off if you like. Wild brownies are more of a problem!

Regards
Peter

Thanks Peter,

I always make at least one trip a year to the test in the winter (though I'm not sure if its the grayling I go for or the pint in front of the fire afterwards)

Its the brownies that Im afte so need a spring/summer/autumn venue.

I would prefer something wild (ish) but may have to settle for one of the stocked lakes/fisheries that offers a little bit of river fishing next to the lake.

Thank you for your reply though.

Regards,

Mark

It's a myth!!! Trout streams with wild brownies and cheap near London??!
I came here 7 years ago with same passion and enthusiasm but after years of researching and travelling I gave up. My first places for that are Scottish borders and Wales.
Southern England is full of Chalk Streams and rivers, unfortunately all of that faces the pressure of millions of fresh water fishermen and fact that almost 95% of waters in UK are privately owned gives you no chances. In my personal opinion as I work in the financial sector, the proximity to London has made the situation unsustainable as most of the rich fella that can afford £250/day are coming from the city.

If you want have fun close to London (you can get there by tube+bus) you can go to the River Wandle, it's an urban chalkstream river and it's free!
There are few Browns but the most frequent encounter is this lovely fella

You can foul them on a dry with royal wulff or palmers and you can encounter some big buddy in the deep pool with bloodwarm or hydropsyche larvae

Otherwise marxach advise above is top notch for Graylings

Sensibly priced trouting around London ,well my advice is win the lottery or get a megabucks job ,many years ago I had a great salary and ran too a once a fortnight, rod on the Kennet town waters for 3 or 4 years ,then I caught the migratory bug and along came a son and lower paid work ,since then I have fished quite a few chalkstreams mainly due to the generosity of folk many of whom were or are posters here, but I will not pay the often obscene prices often for stock fish that the grown on fish of the midland ressers put into the pale .
Now grayling fishing on the Chalk still can (and I stress can) be great value fishing for really wild fish that can be dead easy or fantastically finicky and sometimes impossible .
I find the lady has stretched my flyfishing season to a year round activity .
Do the grayling whilst you can the beat owners are waking uo to the fact that it is an extra income flow and prices are creeping up rapidly ,and we lLondonners will be compelled to travel further and further and miss out on the Chalk where it is very unlikly that you will be sent home with a filthy high river .
Must get the rod down to the Wandle myself sometime soon .

Wow thank you all for your advice....its as I thought but at least there are a few ideas for me to start on.

The wandle seems like it could be worth a go...just for a few hours of pottering around. Can anyone advise me which stretch is the best bit for fly fishing and I guess where is the river the prettiest/quietest.

Also LG1, Salisbury is not too far so any advice on the area would be really appreciated.

Mark
