Default Upper Teign

Just back from a week in Devon, mainly walking but some fishing.

Our first 3 days were on Dartmoor. Horrendous weather put paid to the Dart but a friend of mine has a private beat on a mid Devon stream and he kindly invited me to join him. It rained all day bit the valley was sheltered and the fish came steadily. This size typically

The following day was sunny but the forecast was for heavy rain and gale force winds so I suggested to another mate that the Upper Teign was a better bet. The weather actually was fine all day on Dartmoor and the forecasters were 100% wrong!! Anyway, the Teign it was and we had an afternoon session. This is a delightful river

and in the 4 hours we fished we had around 40 between us, plenty of them to the dry. What was a bit concerning, though, was the size. This was pretty typical

and this fish, all of 6", was the best we had

It all seemed a bit odd. Plenty of fly life was coming off so there is clearly food around and the beat is hravily tree lined so plenty of terrestrials falling in too I imagine. I would have expected at least one fish of 8" or bigger. As it was, I had one trout that was smaller than some minnows I've caught!

We also had a few days on Exmoor walking. One walk followed the River Barle near Simonsbath and we stayed in Exford on the Exe. This is the Barle

If anybody can give me details of fishing opportunities in eitehr Exford or Simonsbath I'd be grateful

Regards

Peter

Yep we have a stunning river, it has been fishing fairly well of late, just wondering what area you fished?
But i was down there today and the two guys struggled a bit, loads of sedge but few rising fish, but my client did catch a really nice 13''.
You should have tried the sea trout!
Which is where i'm going right now, got to get in some fishing for myself sometime.
Cheers
Richard

Peter,

Great locations. I am now really looking forward to my holiday next week if I can escape for a few hours fishing.

Peter,

The Exmoor Forest Inn, Simonsbath used to have several miles on the Barle, just up stream from Landacre, that I fished reguarly over the last few years, when on holiday in late August. I have just checked their website and there is no specific mention of it so they may not have renewed the lease. If that is the case then it is a pity because it is a great stretch of river and there is very little else available in the middle of the moor that I know of.

The Lyn, Horner and Farley have fishing available on DT but they are a bit too far away from my base for convenient access, when the kids are supposed to be in bed!

If anybody knows of any available beats close to Withypool, I would be very interested to hear.

Rob

Thanks Rob. We stayed at the Crown at Exford and they couldn't tell me much about the fishing. The Exe runs through the town and looked very nice!

Look forward to hearing how you got on....hope the weather is kind!

Just found another page on the Exmoor Forest Inn's website - they do still have the fishing on the Barle. Phew!

Fishing

This stretch is stunning and has plenty of fish of 6" to 12" in a decent sized river. A lovely place to stay too but DTs were available to non residents.

Good news that Rob. I have stayed at the EFI, very good food apart from anything else!

Peter

If you happen to be passing the Taw on 7/8 Aug, I shall be strutting my stuff with Pete T and quaffing a few ales as well. Please feel free to drop in.
