Just back from a week in Devon, mainly walking but some fishing.
Our first 3 days were on Dartmoor. Horrendous weather put paid to the Dart but a friend of mine has a private beat on a mid Devon stream and he kindly invited me to join him. It rained all day bit the valley was sheltered and the fish came steadily. This size typically
The following day was sunny but the forecast was for heavy rain and gale force winds so I suggested to another mate that the Upper Teign was a better bet. The weather actually was fine all day on Dartmoor and the forecasters were 100% wrong!! Anyway, the Teign it was and we had an afternoon session. This is a delightful river
and in the 4 hours we fished we had around 40 between us, plenty of them to the dry. What was a bit concerning, though, was the size. This was pretty typical
and this fish, all of 6", was the best we had
It all seemed a bit odd. Plenty of fly life was coming off so there is clearly food around and the beat is hravily tree lined so plenty of terrestrials falling in too I imagine. I would have expected at least one fish of 8" or bigger. As it was, I had one trout that was smaller than some minnows I've caught!
We also had a few days on Exmoor walking. One walk followed the River Barle near Simonsbath and we stayed in Exford on the Exe. This is the Barle
If anybody can give me details of fishing opportunities in eitehr Exford or Simonsbath I'd be grateful
Regards
Peter
