Update as promised..... We fished the Cammarch hotel top and bottom beats 9th and 10th Nov. Friday was a cracking day with lovely autumn sunshine most of the day. Friday, the river was low as reported but just a faint touch of colour in is from the previous days showers. Gravel runs proved the best places to fish. Those with good riffles proving better than smooth glides.
Red was the key to success, fish taken on GH hears ear with red tag, red tag, variant of the red tag with a bibio type hot spot in the middle of the hear body rather than a tag, hot spot shrimps, double bead pearl back HE, an egg fly made of red glister dubbing!! Peeping caddis was the exception. Saturday we got to the river to find it full of leaves and up several inches. Weather not so nice, cloudy with showers. Had been advised to look for the trains of leaves as these are food lanes. Well these trains of leaved were not like the Ivor the engine trains from Friday, they were like the big freight trains in the US that take 40 mins to roll through Fort Collins. Our flies were hanging up on them and racing through the pools, snagging on them etc., a real pain. After a couple of hours though they did appear to flush through and that made life easier. We caught less fish and could not find them in the places we profited from the day before. All in all a great couple of days. What did I learn, loads, felt boots with studs are a must on the Irfon. I will take a wading stick next time gravel bottoms ok but the stone bottom pools difficult to navigate. The need to change weight on the cast constantly to get the flies tracking along the bottom. For me the quickest way was to add/remove one or two split shot to a small dropper. Quicker and easier than changing flies for different weight. Must do more grayling fishing....Many thanks to those folks who offered advice, tips, it helped a lot. Cheers, Mark
Typical fish we saw...
