Default SALMON in the River Aire?

I have just been looking at a different fishing forum and there is a person on it who claims to have seen a salmon jump clean out of the water in front of him while fishing.

Does anyone think if there are any salmon in the river at all?
Or was he telling porkies?

hi artic same home town as me , i think they are moving up a bit further now, i know this is a few years after you posted this but thought i would say hello i wish they would get to keighley and beyond there are some nice streams / becks around here now that would be ideal spawning grounds, i live in scotland now and have a river to myself thanks to the farmer , but i do come down here to visit and spend a lot of time fishing my old free to fish haunts.

Yes there's definitely a few getting up now, 90% sure i saw one, and somebody caught a seatrout kelt at saltaire last year. Apparently the main run comes very late and on very high water, very few of them though, so from an angling point of view they're not really achievable. Think a pike angler caught one around castleford a few years back though? On another note the Ure is experiencing good runs of fish now with both spring and autumn runs, and fish are starting to crop up on the wharfe more often.

Oh great. I personally don't want any salmon in the river.

Why's that? They're a sign of a healthy river (although the jury's still out on certain parts of the aire on that front..) and so migratory fish turning up probably (in water quality/environmental terms) means good news for other species too.

Look here Calder & Colne Rivers Trust

Reference and pictures of both Salmon and Sea Trout in "Directors Blog" page under November 2010 and Jan 2011

Like it or not European Water Framework Directive states quite clearly " we will have self sustaining populations of migratory species by 2021" this includes Eel, Lamprey, Shad etc.
