Agree with all that has been said in respect of access to Hodder and Ribble!

I am a born and bred Preston lad, yet my river fishing has been mostly done in Cumbria on the Eden system because access to quality water on my local river is so difficult - for example, last time I looked, Whitewell Anglers had a waiting list something daft like 10 years. Then you've got other clubs like Mid Ribble and Ribblesdale - but IMO the fees are expensive for a relatively small piece of water.

I've just managed to get membership of a prestigious club which has water on the Ribble at Sawley (and the Eden and Ure), but it's costing me a small fortune and I needed bare faced cheek and a slice of luck before I developed the contacts required to get in.

How is it that the Ribble is so much harder to access than the Eden? The latter is the superior river IMO, yet much is available on a day ticket....

Default how come?

It's location , the Ribble is probably the nearest proper river within striking distance of all the big Lancs towns and also Manchester and Liverpool .

The Eden is a bit further afield and access for evenings is out of the question. It does not a massive local population putting pressure on and so the water is cheaper and more readily available .
Just stating the obvious really sorry if I'm boring

Above the golden gravel,

To join the brimming river,

Question Eden?

edenangler have you got any info on a good day ticket stretch of the Eden for Grayling or any Cumbrian river which may be worth a visit over Christmas fly or trotting on the pin ?

Hi Tony & Andy,

Just a brief post to say thank you for the PM's and info, it really is appreciated.

Does anyone know exactly which beats on the Hodder that Bowland Anglers have access to?

Thanks again for the info

M

Thumbs up Hodder ?

They have the river near the Hodder Bridge which I used to fish they have improved it and made pools and the general habitat better, to be honest it was fantastic anyway the Black Wheel is a bit of a walk but well worth it they have some really good water on the Ribble as well Paithorn for example, my mate takes me too his favorite stretches . I am sure you will find many more

Alas Penrith Anglers - where I am a member - no longer issue day tickets out of the trout season, which is a shame as there is excellent water at Little Salkeld and Bolton Willows. The latter is a shared beat with Appleby Anglers 01768 351240, so you could check them out to see if they issue day permits. If so, I think they allow trotting as well as fly...and believe me, there are some huge grayling to be caught on the stretch if you can find them

You could also try Eden Lacy, a little further downstream. This is a day ticket fishery of the highest order, but you will need to book - Victor Gubbins on 01768 898130

Hope this helps,
Matt

Thanks for the additional information Tony

Interesting info from Matt, with regards the Eden.

We had a couple of trips to the lower Eden in October, and caught some nice fish, but the middle river is on our list to spend a little more time there next year, and we had been thinking of paying the day ticket beat at Bolton a visit to get a feel for the Appleby waters. It's £15 a day with access to 2 miles of river.

Also, the clubs such as Appleby, Penrith, Kirby Stepehn, and Windermere - all have Exchange Tickets, so for the price of joining one club, you can have access to all the waters of the other clubs as well!
Only problem is deciding where to fish, and of coarse the travelling!

If you were thinking of joining a club on the Eden, I would recommend PAA over Appleby any day of the week - more water, greater variety, Eden, Eamont, Lowther etc - gives you more options for your coin. A great little club to be a member of too, as members include top class north country men like Geoff Johnston, Jeremy Lucas and Andrew Dixon. Bump into any of those on the bank and you're in for an education, I can tell you!!
