Default River Wear

After a poor first visit a few weeks back i decided to have a second visit yesterday.

The conditions were perfect, light winds, overcast and mild with steady pressure.

We arrived at around 9.00am at the croxdale stretch (fishing up towards page bank) and looked over the bridge to fish rising all over the place to what looked like a large hatch of hawthorns.

So i set up with a shimpans buzzer and staright away started getting rises. which most i missed!

I decided to walk about 300 yards up stream and managed 4 fish. 3 being browns and 1 being a nice smolt.

I then decided to change tactics and try the faster pools for a while with the nymphs to no evail.

I only had 30 mins left to fish of my 3 hour session so decided to put a olive klinkhammer on as some olive dunns were hatching off.

I saw a larger brown rise and instantly cast about 3 yards up stream. The fly drifted down and with a large swirl the fly was sucked up by a nice brown measuring in at around 9-10".

For the last 30 mins i decided to try my salmon rod and practice my casting.

All in all a nice day

Andy

Hello Andy.

I think the hatch you saw was actually Grannom (Brachycentrus subnubilis) not hawthorns - Google and have a look. I fished the Wear today from the A167 bridge down to the Browney mouth and the extent and density of the Grannom hatch had to be seen to be believed. Oddly the trout weren't going mad for them and I didn't see any at all. I did see a large sea trout or salmon kelt, a group of large barbel, a heron, a greater spotted woodpecker, and tortoiseshell, peacock and orange tip butterflies. A canny session I think.

Yeah your probably right. I fished the wear today and went down the brockbank end for a look and not much was happening. so for the last hour i went back to the viaduct and managed 2 fish on a olive klinkhammer.

The hatches today had to be seen to be believed. Thousands of flies were coming from the waters edge. I truly think the fish are full to bursting today.

I saw one sea trout jump today so ill be back one evening for a nice session

Well after some rainfall on the weekend me and my father decided to head out on to the wear. We arrived and i set up with a peter ross and my dad set up with a marabou.

After a couple of fish jumping and waiting for it to get dark we worked our way down the pool. I lost 2 fish and had a number of strong pulls but unfortunately no fish were landed by either of us.

Had a good session though and its promising for the rest of the season. Just need some more rain to bring a few more fish back into the river system.

Well having popped up the day before to wade the willow pool at durham in daylight to find the nasty drop off's I decided to head there on saturday night for a few hours sea trout fishing.

During the week the river had risen twice and with my wishful thinking i hoped this might have brought a number of fish up to these pools.

i started by the wall end and worked my way down to the willow pool as the night wore on. i did have a few pulls but again no fish for my efforts.

i did see a nice sea trout jump and heard a few more when the darkness rolled in.

Maybe when we get some more substantial rain the fishing will improve and i might get that illusive sea trout.

Keep at it Andy and learn them pools.
The Pylon Pool at Tudhoe is a good pool for sea-trout and upstream in the plantation there is some nice new pools worth trying.
You can park at the botom of Tudhoe and you will see the large pylons over the Wear. I fished around their the other evening but never saw much.
