I'm on the Thurs-Sat ticket this season because it should fit in better with my work hours. I'm looking forward to my first trip out in a week or so ... must get busy tying up some new flies for the season.

Jon - not sure I think the upper section fishes best early season before the surface action starts but last year I enjoyed fishing below and around the hatchgate. I''ll probably decide on the drive down. What about you ?

Spent Sunday morning on the river. Started at the Hatchgate with a GRHE nymph and fished a few of the pools on the way up to the confluence with the hart. Few decent sized olives coming off on one of the sunnier pools and even observed what looked like a very big fish rise - unfortunately he was downstream of where I was fishing though.

Changed to a size 14 killer bug and ended up connecting with and losing 3 trout. First two were small - perhaps 1/4 lb and came off after a short struggle. The third looked like it was probably a half pound stockie and I also performed the traditional long range release.

Even though I blanked it was good to cast a rod for the first time since late June. I actually had real problems casting, was christening a new 6ft 6 rod and I struggled, not sure if it was the shorter length, softer action or the head wind but spent a lot of my time retrieving my fly from various trees.

i too fished sunday, no fish but the river looked great. i spent an hour from dead cert to the farm trying dries. then changed to the nymph and had 3 or 4 lightening takes but failed to connect. the water was very cold so i suppose that was keeping them down. jon.

What rod did you end up buying in the end? I find it easier casting a short rod compared to the 10 footer I've been using for Grayling fishing ... the longer rod accenuates any tracking problems I have in my casting

Mind you, if it's a head wind and you've only got a #3 line then that can be problematic as well.

I guess it's just a case of fishing more often ... that's what I tell my wife anyway
