Ouch !! not sure I would be brave enough to pop a dislocation back in myself. On the plus side the river should be fishing well by the time you get back on the bank.

Dougie - mid-April onwards is about right for Hawthorn, partcularly 'down south'. You should have a lot of large dark olives about too.

I'm hoping the mayfly is as good this year as last - I'll be watching the Saturday fishing reports (Lawrence - I'm relying on you in that regard) before I decide if I should make a 3 hour drive down on a Sunday!!!

Fished Saturday afternoon below Hart confluence, had a second encounter with a large trout under the same alder as last Friday afternoon with the same fly but with a different outcome. Hooked a fin perfect over Wintered stockie of about 2lb.

Lots of hawthorn fly on the water but no trout were interested. A few olives showing in the meadow section with one or two fish rising. I left the water at 4pm and probably missed the best fishing as the temperature fell in the evening.

Default update on the hawthorn situation!!

fished from 5 til 8 this evening (monday) there was a plague of hawthorn, 1000s of them and the trout were hard on them. i had more takes than i have ever had on the whitewater and they were lightning fast. any way i ended up with about 10 fish from the lower reaches of the river. the biggest about 2 lbs but the highlight of the evening was an 8oz wild fish that was so fat in the belly, it was full of hawthorn. the upper reaches were a bit dead, anyone else noticed this? anyway i have the rest of the week off so i will be back tomorrow. jon.

Just received my permit (Sun-Tues) - very excited for my first trip this Sunday! It is so close to home - less than 5 mins! Any advice from the seasoned pros?

Had a quick look this evening at Hatchgate Bridge on my way back from work - too late to fish but saw someone's car. Any success?

xan, it was dougies car, i passed in the silver golf. i was going for a pint with a mate and it is unusual to see 2 cars there so i slowed to see who it was. i am fishing sunday also if you want a few pointers then we could meet up. dougie fishes sunday also so it would be better if we know where we are all going to be. that saves the water taking to much of a beating. let me know if you are up for it. jon.

Troutwizz,

This is the Whitewater in Hampshire, England ... might be a bit of a stretch for you to get over here.

Indeed it was my car. Managed a short session from about 6.30 to 8.15 and fished from the hatchgate up to the hart. There wasn't really any hawthorn in the air but I could see that some were still being swept downstream. It didn't take too long to find trout stationed in little runs picking them off. Only managed two fish, one of about 2lb and another about 1.5 lbs. I lost several more including a lump at lunkers and another big fish up at the bend just before the confluence with the Hart. It was pretty cold towards the end but it was still possible to find the odd fish rising - great evening. Not 100% sure I'll be on the river this coming weekend, if I am I would be happy to show Xan the likely fish holding spots.

Jon, Dougie, Very kind offers - it would be great to meet up on Sunday and I'd certainly appreciate a few pointers! Not quite sure of my timings but likely to be an afternoon/evening session for me - I'll check with the boss!
