Default River Itchen - Itchen Stoke

Does anyone know anything about the Fishing on The Itchen between Avington and Itchen Stoke?

I'm currently working in the area and had a snoop around on the way home. Somewhere off the the B3047 near Itchen Stoke I found a footpath that went down to a lovely stretch of the Itchen. I saw several Trout and really fancy having a go.

There was no indication that this was a private stretch of water, does anyone know differently?

I also saw a number of decent Trout in where the road crosses the Itchen between Avington and Itchen Abbas. This was most definitely gated so I guess is completely out of the question.

I have seen previous threads and will go and have a look at the stretch around Bishopstoke and under the M3 too.

Thanks In advance,

Roger

You'd be very lucky indeed to find any free or even ticket fishing at Avington apart from in the Avington Fishery. I too have looked enviously at the river in those parts whilst deer stalking nearby and watched big trout knocking off fly after fly. Why do they do that when you can't fish but get on a stretch with a rod and they all disappear!

I used to live in Itchin Abscess. There is nothing free around there. Twyford and down near the statue in town are the only places I found. Romsey park was cheap, we used to pike it.

Have you tried asking in The Rod Box just down the road at Kings Worthy?

They would definitely know. Good service in there.

That's a great idea Hants, I think I'll give them a call.

I've subsequently had a scout around on the internet and there is fishing available just above where I was and they want £1500 (honest!) per day for two rods.

I'd be surprised if the section I was looking at isn't owned by somebody but there was a distinct lack of signs and it was right next to a footpath.

I'll have another look around next week and see if I can find any more evidence.

Cheers

Roger,

If you kept on walking along that footpath, did you came to a bridge, cross it, and there was a pub? The main river on your right as you walk up? If so, its all private! I can vouch for that!

Hi Howard,

Apologies for the delay in replying, just got back from holiday.

The section I am talking about was on the Itchin way footpath. It had the main river on your right and a feeder stream on the left of the path. You walked over a small bridge as soon as you got there. I didn't walk up too far as I was in work clothes and it was very wet under foot.

I'm going up for another look next week. to see if I can suss anything else out.

I pretty sure that I know where you are. The fishing is private!

The pub at the other end of the footpath, The Bush, used to have details of the chap who's fishing it is. Ramsbotham seems to ring a bell. No idea of contact details though.

If nothing else, it is a good pub and worth a pint and some food.

Good luck in your search.

Hants

Yeah I think that’s where Roger is too Hants, and yeah a nice pub. The carrier stream on your left as you walk up does look tempting! Although there are signs saying Private on your right as you walk up. But I've not been there for years.

Howard / Hants,

I went to have a look at the river again last night and it is indeed the section just downstream from the Bush pub.

A wonderful stretch of water... the river was alive with feeding trout last night. I saw a grayling of a pound in no more than a foot of water in the feeder stream and several trout over the pound mark on the main river.

There is a private fishing sign just the upstream of the bridge. I think I'll have a go at the Bishopstoke section mentioned in other threads one evening this week.

All very frustrating but lovely to see nevertheless. ho hum!
