Default Salmon fishing Glanwye

Am looking to do some salmon fishing at glanwye this season, on checking the wye and usk passport ive noticed the price has jumped up to £60 (from £30-£45) for a day, is there any reason for this ??

Have never seen the beat so would be interested to know which tackle would be suitable

Cheers

Matt

It's certainly not a reflection of any increased chance of catching a salmon! Glanwye didn't record a fish until September in 2010 but finished the season with 25 and there were just 9 from May to August in 2009 contributing to a total of 14 for the year. It was better in 2008 with 58 but then the whole river had a better year in 2008.

On most of the middle and upper Wye, once the floating line is in, you'd be fine with a 13 - 14' rod throwing a #9/10 line but earlier in the season you'll see plenty using something a foot longer and a line weight heavier.

It's also £60 per day if you just want to fish for trout, which for a spate river in Wales is extraordinary. I booked a day's grayling fishing there last Autumn but when we got there, the river was too coloured to fish. The beat looked fantastic though and I would love to fish it for trout, but £60.....

Robbers,But there are some rivers in Scotland that want to charge you the Salmon rate, for Trout fishing. But that's just to keep the rif-raf away

In this climate I just cant see how the owner can justify a jump from from £30to £60 for the pleasure - £60 per day for trout is crazy !! I think ill query the costing with the wye foundation..£15 is more acceptable for winter grayling

I wish you well with your haggling...

"The Wye & Usk Foundation are fortunate again this season to have access to salmon and trout fishing for up to 4 rods at one of the upper Wye's prime beats. (In October 2008, a party of 4 anglers caught 25 salmon to 24 lbs in 3 days at Glanwye). All bookings will be subject to availability at one weeks notice, on a week to week basis.

One of the main attractions to bookings on this beat, is the use of all the facilities at the lodge during the day."

If you don't want the facilities, yet still want the exclusive upper river experience, there is always Lower Glanwye (Llyn Em) at £15 trout or £25 to £35 salmon.

Sewinbasher, I note the catches are now recorded seperately The Wye and Usk Foundation - Wye Salmon Catches To Date eg. 9 in 2009 versus 14 on Glanwye proper. Was it always thus?

This means about half the season's catch for the beat was taken over 3 days very late in the season, possibly a bit on the stale side!

Just over 16% of the entire 2008 Wye catch for that month!

Querying the trout price not the salmon - no haggling either

£60 is a hell of a lot of money for a days trout fishing in my eyes considering it was a lot cheaper last season !

When you work it out - even if the owner only gets 130 days of one rod using the river thats just under 8k....over 3k more then last season !!

Dont get me wrong im sure its a lovely beat but thats a hell of a hike !
