Our last fishing day at the “Untere Argen” would be a short one since the drive back home would take 7 hours or more.
After breakfast at the hotel we gathered our luggage and checked out.
This was not the time to experiment so we headed to the proven stretches of beat 1.
I wanted to fish the start of beat 1 during daylight but when I encountered two anglers on the day down I was intrigued why they left.
Apparently people where swimming in the at my intended fishing spot, I walked upstream anyway to see how the situation was.

Start of beat nr. 1.
I took a shortcut through the forest and ended up at the bridge.
One angler was fishing the pool while another sat down at the edge of the pool contaminating the water with his bare feet.
To bad for me, I had to look elsewhere for fish.
When wading upstream I ignored the shallow trench in the rivers bend.
Since I was moving downstream I decided to try the banks anyway in case I had bypassed fish.

Forgotten stretch.
To my surprise a rainbow trout chased after the streamer on the first cast in a spot I t suspected was fishless.
I progressed downstream and had many hits of fish that chased the streamer.
Most of them threw the hook but a few stayed on.

Nice coloured brown.
I ended up at Toms pool again where he was sight casting to the many trout stacked in the pool.
Tom had put all contents of his fly-box on the leader but the fish just refused to take anything.
He asked me to fish the pool with a streamer so I did.
Immediately the streamer was intercepted by one of the rainbows in the pool.

At Toms pool.
I had a few more strikes on the fly but those did not result in solid hook-ups.
We had the impression it was just too hot for fishing, the fact that further downstream people where bathing their dogs did not help either.
Tom had spotted trout and a couple of chub in the pool.
The chubs where as uncooperative as the trout though so all I could do was take some more pictures of the fish before I left.

Chub.
At 14.00 we all assembled at the car, it was time to head home.
All in all we liked fishing this river, the clear water and fish where a plus.
What we missed was a good evening rise and of course we could do without the bathers.
Maybe we will visit that river again during another month of the year.
My next visit to Germany will be coming Thursday when a range of people from my Dutch fly-fishing club will be visiting the Bode river in Germany’s Harz region.
Report will follow.
