Default The Aire between Cononley and Airedale Bus. Centre

I am looking for information regarding the stretch between the above.

Bradford No1 AA has a short stretch straight opposite Low Bradley. Known as 'Bradley' in the yearbook

But Bradford City AA has a very long stretch on the other side that starts from Cononley Bridge all the way to the start of the A629(Skipton By-Pass). Known as 'Cononley' in the yearbook.

If anyone has fished any of these waters, then please let me know. I want to fish both these stretches but I don't know what the best way to get to the river is!

What fish is there in it, Pike, Chub, Perch, Grayling, Trout ?

Please help.

Hi

Connonly and bradley are mostly deep stretches of the Aire which we fish during the winter months for pike. If your fishing the fly look further upstream around Broughton, the river here is shallower and more featured and lends itself well to fly fishing with riffles over gravel and deep pools, its got everything really. Bradford no 1 have the right bank from the railway bridge above the old road bridge to around half way down Heslaker lane, from there they have the left bank for a good distance and the limits are well signed. Bradford City have the opposite bank which is known as Gargrave and Broughton. The Gargrave length is Bradford City's premier trout water and is stocked annually with brown trout, this is from the old road bridge right the way upstream into Gargrave where the limit is the Weir, the club have a lot of problems with poachers on this length. The Bradford City length known as Broughton is left bank from the old road bridge down for I believe 2 fields ( I may be wrong here) and joins onto the Bradford No 1 length.

As for fish, well, few and far between I'm afraid but the fish that are in residence are always BIG !!!. there is a balance between trout and Grayling and the grayling can be very large indeed but a lot of hard work and frustration is needed before they will give themselves up but the fishing can be very rewarding at times. Don't expect trout of less than a pound. Always fish upstream cos the river is usually gin clear. There are some huge Chub in this part of the river and we have had Chub to 6lb but believe me there are fish there that would put a six pounder to shame, I know I have seen them but sadly not caught them. There are also pike which also grow to a good size, I heard of a fish of 24lb taken on a fly from the guy who caught it but I did not see the fish.

If you join both Bradford no 1 and Bradford City you have then probably in the region of 4 to 5 miles of double bank fishing although you do need a day permit to fish Gargrave because numbers of anglers are limited on the banks, this is a free members permit not a 'day ticket'. There are access points down Hesslaker Lane and also from the old road bridge.Bradford City also share a good length with Skipton AA a little further down from Broughton which is a delightful length.

Hope this helps

Leo

Thanks for your reply.

I am already with both the clubs, but have joined Bradford City for the first time this year.

I have been with Bradford No1 AA for years now. My father and I normally fish at Broughton with this club on the Aire.

Since Skipton Angling Club stocked the Aire near Carleton this year, I caught a good trout there. I then went to the same place later on and caught a trout on every cast, all were caught on the fly using a fly which I am not going to mention its name.

I have caught large pike at the railway bridge on the Bradford No1 stretch years ago.
The farmer has also DESTROYED one part of the river up there. We both used to catch about 20 trout between us in one deep pool, but they have put down pebbles on to the bank. The pool isn't there anymore and doesn't produce fish like it used to. I caught a good chub last year at Steeton Bridge at around 6.5lb, quite literally under the bridge itself

With regards to Bradford City again. We will be fishing the Gargrave stretch 'hopefully' sometime this year.

Thanks for the reply again.
