Default River Gryffe

Was out last Saturday afternoon for my first real go at my new club water (Abercorn). River was running fresh & clear after a somewhat showery week.
Ideal wet fly water. Trout came to anything black size 14s. After a bit of chopping & changing settled on a Murray Bluebottle on the bob & a Williams Favourite on the tail. Trout came steadily from each stream but a bit more difficult in the deeper water where maybe a dry would have been better. Still caught about 12-20. Small admittedly but with a couple going 10" & one good pull in a deeper pool under an overhanging branch but unfortunately contact was of short duration so did not get a look at it but felt heavier.
One thing that spoiled it for me was the amount of rubbish lying on the bank at a deep pool near the roadside (The Clay Hole) I think it is called. Usual forked sticks but with a selection of empty Bud bottles & plastic bags. A nice tin of worms had been forgotten to have been taken away so I retained the box (new)for winter trotting for Grayling. Suppose something good comes out of every scenario. Lifted a few items but I could have half filled a black bag if I had really looked.
Still (River Runner) a point maybe to note.
Still a lovely afternoon/evening & not another fisher in sight too. Must remember to take my camera next time & get some shots of this part of the river

Default River Gryffe

Hi Highlander

I was out last Saturday as well from just before lunchtime till about 4ish but didn't see anyone else either (apart from a couple of folk fishing in the wrong place..and one of our baliliffs who was kind enough to give me a bit of tour and point out some part of the river I'd never seen before - very much appreciated Tam!)

Was a last minute decision to take my rod with me but ended up having the best day I've had so far on the river.

Started off up near Crosslee and had a couple on emerging buzzers. Fish were rising quite freely so had plenty of swirls at the flies but only managed to connect with 2.

Worked downriver and switched onto small wets - not a method I've been particularly good at but took another 5 at various points including a lovely 1 1/4lb brownie which was invited home for dinner. The rest were all safely released.

Couple of mine came on a bluebottle pattern too as well as a small snatcher pattern with a few strands of green glister dubbing.

Must be making progress as last year I managed a grand total of 1 fish during about 3 or 4 days on the river.

I'm hoping to be back out in in a couple of weeks time so will let you know nearer the time if you're interested in meeting up...

Regards

Peter

Highlander you wrote about the clayhole and the state it is in.

I agree that it is in a state however that is not the problem of the Abercorn and I hope that you are aware that we as a club are not to be fishing that stretch of the river. Please go to our website for full info on where you can fish.

If you are looking for anything to be done about the area in question feel free to contact the ripirian owners about their responsibilities as land owners and by the way good luck!!! I have tried for years but to no avail.

I was told that the stretch above the club house to the old sluice & the left bank down a bit from the bridge was in dispute with Elderslie estates & that we were "not to fish" officially. As this is well above that, I thought that this was club water. I see by the online map that it goes up to there & a few pools again. The map you sent me with my permit clearly shows this as Abercorn water.
Beats 9 & 10 (Pool 13 & 14). Now I know I will avoid it. Thanks for update info. Still had a nice evening even if most of the fish came from "Private Water"

PS as an aside where is the best place to park at Crosslee. Can you use the Pub/Hotel car park? as I see a gate in the far corner that gives access to river & what if one wants to fish up by the Lawtex stream. Thanks
