Default River Idle - Nottinghamshire

Have been doing a little research into Nottingham rivers and streams. Have discovered that the Environment Agency say that the upper Idle holds and excellent number of wild trout. Certainly reports of salmon being found there, would suggest that this may be true. Has anyone any knowledge of any trout fishing on the Idle? Are there any syndicates? Any information would be welcomed.

Derbyshire County Angling Club has some excellent mixed fishing on the Idle...

Hi 1965nick, I realise this post was from a few years back but I was interested to see what you find out as im similarly curious about any trout spots on the river idle, I live in Retford and fish local stillwaters but fancied trying a bit of river fishing and wondered if you found any locations in and around north notts?

The DCAC is a good resource and have a trout stillwater in Retford but I think it is quite expensive and was interested to see if there were day ticket options available anywhere, any info would be appreciated.

I have not found any access onto the Idle yet. But EA reports do suggest wild trout in the upper reaches, along with the Idle's trib the Ryton. Any trout fishing should be of course catch and release, to maintain the population. I will be case I'm afraid of contacting local landowners to seek permission, and lots of walking to find the the trout. I haven't been able to get out at all this year due to my health. A bit further south of Retford there is the Meden, which definitely has a good population of trout, including some rather big ones, and then there is the Maun which does have some trout too.

I'd welcolme information on wild trout in Nottinghamshire too.

Derbyshire county do an Idle only ticket £20 odd pounds I think, considerably less than a full book and no entrance fee.
Hope this helps.
Dave.

No trout in the river Idle in the stretches that I have fished, with bait, spinner and fly when targetting chub. In the mid 1980's the Ryton was stocked with Trout at Serlby estate, now owned by Mc Donald of polypipe , I caught plenty of these on the Bircotes stretch at Scrooby which runs freely into the Idle nr Bawtry. Also about the same time on the land where my friend was the gamekeeper we found the Maltby dyke(trout stream) damned with sand bags to give it some depth, running his lower stretch almost dry, so removed the obstruction only to then realise that the dam had been constructed to hold trout. All these would of entered the Idle at scrooby through the swing drain cover on the stream end. The stream running in and out of Thorsby (Mean or Medan- whichever runs into what!) is a nice clean shallow running river similar in appearence to the Test carriers around Stocksbridge. There are also Trout in the Roche at Maltby.
For prime river trout fishing in your area why not try the Don at Sheffield.
S.P.R.I.T.E. is a free to join env' group fronted by friendly fly fishers who meet once a month on the river in season and once a month in pub out of season. All will show you the best "free" places to fish with plenty of big Grayling and 2lb plus Trout in there adopted stretches.

Thanks for the info. I'm convinced the trout are there, and this kind of tracking down elusive fish suits me. The Meden is defintely one to target, along with the Ryton. As these rivers become cleaner the prospects seem to get higher. I'd love to try the Don, but Sheffield is a little north for me, being based in inner city Nottingham. I'd love to try for the elusive trout in the Leen, and the Erewash. Time is my biggest enemy though.

I'vecourse fished the maun in the past near Walesby when day tickets were available & the odd trout did show up then.
Often thought about the Meden or even the Poulter, but the same as you, struggle to find who I need to speak to about fishing streches I've seen.

I've walked the Meden around Bothamsall just east of the A614 quite a few times lately but haven't seen anything, last night looked perfect conditions as well with a lot of fly life on the river but didn't see any fish (not always a guarantee they are not there I know!), ive got the details of the guy I would need to speak to on the Thoresby estate to try and get permission to fish should anyone be interested. There has always been reports of the odd trout being taken on the idle around Retford / Gamston areas and it has intrigued me about whether its just a small population or whether they just dont get fished for with a fly, the trouble is a large section of the river at Gamston in private.

Thinking about trying Church Warsop (Meden as well I think?), girlfriends uncle works for the EA and assures me there's brownies if you walk the river from the centre of church warsop back towards Thoresby, think this is downstream, does anyone know of this is right?

I've been in contact about fishing the Don in Sheffield and will definitely be doing this ASAP.

Cheers all for the help, just looking at expanding my horizons from the stillwaters!!
